No one was yawning at covent garden, in fact they were so many people munching popcorn, crisps etc. It's not the kind of film for that....I think

Just back from Cov Garden - quite busy. It was a good film, didn't know more than what's been on this forum, but quite enjoyed it. thought it got better as it went on ... but the
banana
bit! Oh my god!!! Loved the lead girl's acting but the winner for me was Rosamund Pike!
A contrast to her 007 role which is what I always think of when I see her.
Very watchable, not as good as I was expecting, but a very respectable 7/10 from me.

I watched it at The Printworks tonight and really enjoyed it as did my friend, daughter and 3 German Exchange students. Emma Thompson is so like my daughter's headteacher
We all enjoyed it for different reasons and I must agree the ending not what I imagined. Was this based on a true story? I think it said memoirs at the end

Just come back from seeing the film in Cardiff - thanks to gismo1554.

A pleasent enough film but I felt the characters needed a little more depth, I really wanted Rosamund's character to give some hint of her background. Also, the ending was a bit mills and boon.

I could see why it was set in the 60's, the innocencence portrayed could not really be seen today in our 16- 17yr olds. But still would give it 7/10.

Yes, 7/10 is probably about right. I enjoyed the film but it lacked a certain depth, you never really got the hang of any of the characters, and the ending was a bit disappointing. Some very good performances though!

I saw it tonight at Covent Garden, well written and well acted with some very good performances indeed (Rosamund Pike, Alfred Molina and Emma Thompson in particular). Somewhat let down by a slightly weak story with some un-loveable characters and a really rubbish throw-away ending. Anyone else think there was definitely some big plot twist missing at the end there?

The lead girl was quite lovely though (I think I'm allowed say that, she's 24 in real life!)

Welcome wombler! Glad you enjoyed the film, I think just about everyone mentioned problems with the ending. Surely if they had test screenings they will change the ending! It just ended really unsatisfactorily and I expected some kind of plot twist too.

I agree with Superhero about Alfred Molina having the best lines.
apart from that, I found the film to be rather a letdown. The most interesting thing about it was spotting the historical inaccuracies and the anachronisms like double glazing in shots of the street.
The storyline did not engage me at all. Nothing to dislike, but instantly forgetable.

6/10 from me

Although I enjoyed the film I definitely agree with bevvi about the historical inaccuracies, plenty to look at, modern bycicle railings that put you off but I did like it as an overall. True, easy to forget! But the acting was good! Matthew Beard another one from" And When Did You Last See Your Father?" along with Carey Mulligan. And of course Alfred Molina, showing command of punchlines.
7/10

Thought the film was very watchable and well paced, a pleasant surprise. Alfred Molina was great.

Shame the cinema (Metro Centre) was only about half full.

6/10 from me. o/
