Just watched "The Shining". First film ever to truly scare the living crap out of me. What a film.

Member number 33 of the "100 free films in 2012" club. I saw 32, which is rather delightful.. I beat Mr. Glass on free films but he narrowly inched me out on total films seen.

Member number 33 of the "100 free films in 2011" club. I saw 20, interestingly enough. My more realistic target was to see more free films than TheyCallMeMrGlass. I lost.

I don't know why. Its one of the very few adaptations of his books that actually worked. My fav, The Talisman, I read every few years, is perfect for an adaptation. There's been talk about it for years but I've given up hope

King felt the characterisations in the film differed greatly from his original vision. In the book, Jack was portrayed as a kindly family man who slowly was overcome with alcohol and somewhat unpredictably went mad; in the film, he's shown as having intense frustrations with his family from the start, which I suppose in the movie itself is is perfect for the continually building, unbearably tense style.

King also thought Duvall was the wrong choice. He thought she was "too emotionally vulnerable" and that was exactly the opposite of how he had envisioned the character.

I couldn't agree with him less. Kubrick is at his best here.

just signed up for the free 1 month Lovefilm offer and watched my first movie: Shutter Island!

Lovefilm is useful for me so I can catch the odd film I missed at the cinema
