Re: Rest in Peace
yes, Speedie had everything going for him, family, good job, a fortune, devilishly good looks. Hes a massive celebrity in Wales and Tyneside. I wonder if it was murder. I always expected Faustino Asprilla to be the first ex Magpie of my time to go, not so now.
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?

Re: Rest in Peace
I'm a Leeds United boy through and through. I had the pleasure of meeting Gary Speed on two occasions - once actually playing with him in a charity football match. What a thoroughly likeable bloke. He's everything a modern day footballer should be. You look at the current crop of players, and they are generally a selfish bunch. They don't really have any time for their fans. You could never say that about Speed. I recall having a conversation with him when I was about 17 about the plight of Leeds into the abyss of League One football. I couldn't believe he was actually talking to me, Average Joe, in such depth about where it had all gone wrong for Leeds United. I can't think of many other footballers who would have given me that time. I'm deeply grateful for that, I always will be. It's a big deal when a famous person speaks to you and makes you feel so at ease. I'm pretty distraught about it all. I'm saddened it came to this. I'm saddened he felt he had no alternative. But if one good thing comes from this, perhaps now people will begin to take depression seriously in professional sport. It's a case in point that being rich, having good looks, a lovely family, and being beloved the world over isn't a recipe for happiness. I just want to hug him right about now. My thoughts are with his wife, two boys and his father who absolutely worshipped the ground he walked on. A true Leeds United legend, a true footballing hero gone but never, ever, ever forgotten.

Re: Rest in Peace
It's such a sad day for Gary Speed's family, like many still finding it hard to take in, the poor guy what must have been going through his mind
he will be sadly missed by many not just those who knew him but those who watched him grow as a player all the way through to International manager. This serve's as a warning to all those who crave fame and fortune that no matter how well off or happy and sucessful some one may appear to be that people of all classes have problems like everyone else,
Rest In Peace Gary Speed, his family and friends will be in my thoughts and prayers tonight

Supporting the club that I do I can't say that I have ever had much affection for Leeds United. However I had the greatest respect for Gary Speed and was astonished at the news, especially as he was starting to do really well with Wales. There have been several well reported cases of problems with depression recently in professional sport and let's hope this macho thing of not being able to talk about such problems is tackled seriously very soon.mattymc13 wrote:I'm a Leeds United boy through and through. Wow that is straight from the heart, I got a lump in my throat reading this. Depression can happen to anyone and this is the most devastating consequence. My heart goes out to his family and to you mattymac13 losing a childhood hero.mattymc13 wrote:I'm a Leeds United boy through and through.
