Being a cake fiend, afternoon tea is my favourite "meal". I know every tea room in Surrey/Sussex/kent and plenty beyond. I would rather not have to make the cake myself, though - surprise, surprise.

I share your enthusiasm for afternoon tea, Ms Thrifty. Unfortunately, there are no tea room in my part of East London . I know there are plenty of places in central London, but afternoon tea seems to have become a bit trendy and places have started charging exorbitant prices.

When on holiday, especially when in Devon, I am always on the look out for old fashioned country tearooms.

When my girls were growing up, we would often have afternoon tea when they got in from school - bone china, Earl Grey, cucumber sandwiches, a cake stand with a selection of cakes. Their friends used to think we were very posh but it is a very inexpensive treat, the only drawback being the amount of washing up that it generates with all those plates, cups saucers etc.

The best afternoon tea I have ever had was at The Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin although the year before last we did take Hubby's nan to the Ritz as a birthday treat. She loved it and I must admit it does come a worthy second but was so too expensive.

Took mum there for her birthday once, on the expensive side, but totally worth it - they sang happy birthday accompanied by a piano and violin and brought out a special birthday cake (without us having to ask) and wrapped it all up.... it really was wonderful!

Hubby's nan was a little embarrassed when they sang Happy Birthday to her and they gave her a lovely box of choclate truffles to take home - scrumptious although there were only eight in the box!

Wow - all these afternoon teas sound a bit posh to me (though OH did take me to the Ivy for dinner once, so I can do smart). I am usually out walking so hot, scruffy and dishevelled and prefer to sit outside at tea rooms with a huge pot of tea, mug and big wodge of cake. I end up with crumbs and drips everywhere, so I'm better off outdoors.
