Thought this was a thoroughly entertaining film, and it being subtitled French didn't distract from anything, even though the OH had a moan about it to others later (like "see what I have to put up with!") He loved it though and we both thought it was better than Toy Story. I recognised Vanessa Paradis straight away (she's got that distinctive tooth gap) but I thought she looked quite emacicated. I was a bit torn with the love story as I really like Andrew Lincoln and would have been perfectly happy with her staying with him (but hey, more for me now!). The story was of course predictable (the professional heartbreaker who not so professionally falls in love with his victim yadda yadda) but it was charmingly done and subtly funny. There was some inspired use of the Dirty Dancing film and soundtrack, and the sidekicks were quirky too. Don't run away when the credits roll as there will be 3 or 4 short scenes after it. Could people please tell me what the father of the bride said regarding the outstanding debt there, I wasn't quite getting that, but it looked like he had a hand in making sure Alex took the job of seducing his daughter....

Will write a complaint though about the Odeon Greenwich leaving everyone standing outside till 10 to 11! The gallery seats at the back were nice though, I have never had more elbow room before!

I thought this was a great film too. It was a predictable ending but so are most rom coms. I did wonder whether she would stay with her english fiance. It made it a little bit different having it in French rather than English and it didn't make it hard to follow. Think my husband actually enjoyed it too. Wouldn't mind seeing it again!

Really enjoyed this film as I am a fan of French cinema and everything a bit “different”. I went with my sister who was reluctant to watch it when she heard it was in French and subtitled, but she ended up really enjoying it. Yes, it’s predictable, but it’s great fun with lots of laughs thrown in. Plus, the Monte Carlo backdrop is simply glorious!

Ok, from someone saying it was in French and had English subtitles to another saying it was in English and had French subtitles, I'm confused!! Can someone who has seen it say which is which please? Thanks! x

It is in French with English subtitles. I don't think anyone has said anything different!

I really liked this as well - especially the funny dirty dancing. It was clear from the pattern of laughter in the cinema that you need to have seen Dirty Dancing to get all the nuances of Romain Durais's impersonation of Patrick Swayze but even so I thought it was hilarious. Has anyone seen Durais in "The Beat That My Heart" skipped - he's a really good actor.

I also didn't quite get what the father said. I thought he said "And he'll never know he didn't owe the money?" suggesting, I thought, that Alex didn't actually owe the extra 30,000 euros that the man crunching nuts was after him for. If I remember right Alex asked the nut cruncher's boss how much he owed him now and this put extra pressure on him so that he then agreed to take the case. I think the father hired him because of what he said to his daughter when he took her to the wedding - that she would be bored with Andrew Lincoln. My immediate thought at this was "You're right". There was nothing wrong with Andrew LIncoln (just the opposite) but he wasn't very exciting (and his mother was awful!).

Saw this at Wandsworth earlier tonight. I thought it was very enjoyable. Not exactly original but well acted and really funny. Romain Durais as Alex was excellent and Vanessa Paradis wasn't too bad either (I wasn't expecting a great deal from her to be honest). I really enjoyed Julie Ferrier and Francois Damiens as Alex's colleagues too. Julie Ferrier in particular who was almost unrecognisable from her role in Micmacs.
There were a few implausabilities and contrivances but they didn't detract too much from the fun. For example I didn't think they gave good enough reasons for Vanessa Paradis not to be with Andrew Lincoln. He was a tiny bit dull and his mother was a bit of a bitch. Not the best of reasons. I actually felt a little bit sorry for the character towards the end. Admittedly that did save us from the usual rom-com cliche where the female lead is engaged to a completely unsuitable man, who is such an idiot that you can never understand why a supposedly intelligent woman would be with them in the first place (the dire 'Cemetary Junction', I'm looking at you).
I also wasn't overly convinced by the ending. It seemed to me that the filmmakers knew how they wanted to end it but couldn't come up with a legitimate way of getting there. But as I said that didn't ruin it. Enjoyable stuff overall.

[spoiler]As for what the Father said at the end. I think he said to the guy who Alex owed the money to, "And he'll never know he owed me the money?" Suggesting that the Father made sure that he had an added incentive to complete the job, because he knew that he would walk away if he didn't believe the woman was really unhappy in that relationship. Which was what he almost did. Still doesn't completely make sense but that's how I read it.[/spoiler]

[spoiler]As for the father, it seems it did not translate well in English, from the French version it's quite obvious he was actually the boss of the "nut eater" and Alex did not know...
1. Alex owes 30K to a very powerful man
2. Alex doesn't know who the powerful man is
3. The dad offers 50K to break her daughter's couple
4. Alex has to accept the job in order to re-p*y his 30K debt to the powerful man
5. he actually owed the 30K to the guy giving him 50K for the job[/spoiler]
