About half the cast is leaving at the end of September unfortunately.

now for a real shocker: Ghost is closing on October 6! Am absolutely gutted as it's a phenomenal show. Also think it's really surprising as it just opened on Broadway (and will soon in the Netherlands and Australia), has received excellent reviews, lots of awards and ticket sales are really good.

I had heard about Ghost, the Spice Girls show is going in to replace it at the theatre I think, I haven't had chance to see it yet and talking of Australia I think RoA has closed there.

I knew that, but thought it was poor reporting (it was the daily fail after all...) and the show was just transferring to a bigger theatre. But the cast was told last night and the closing date has now been set.

ROA Australia actually had its Sydney season cancelled last year before it could transfer from Melbourne, real shame. And all this news certainly doesn't bode well for ROA London either considering the fact it opened just a month after Ghost and has had much poorer reviews and ticket sales.

GATZ - John Collins in conversation with Robert McCrum

Gatz, the show that took New York by storm, is coming to London. An eight-hour theatrical enactment of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, it was described by The New York Times critic Ben Brantley as 'the most remarkable achievement in theatre not only of this year but also of this decade'. John Collins, artistic director of the production, along with a lead actor from the show, will be in conversation with Robert McCrum, the Associate Editor of The Observer at this exclusive London event.

A complimentary coffee or tea and a croissant will be available from the Cafe on the first floor from 10.30 am.

Can we not have some proper, original, musicals - Mamma Mia, Our House were good, but all these song books/films turned musicals is getting boring.

Clearly there's a market for it, or they wouldn't keep popping up, it really isn't much different from popular novels (or musicals) being turned into films. Besides, I wouldn't call the likes of Ghost, Once, Wicked, Matilda, etc. boring

New musicals coming up in the West End include Soho Cinders, Book of Mormon and In-Between (if it does indeed open on the West End at some stage) neither of which were a book/film/song book before I believe.

I went to see mrs browns boys last night at hammersmith appollo.
Have laughed so much in ages. Really recommend it if any of you can get tickets.

Well I agree with you about adaptation of books and plays. Otherwise we would not have had "My Fair Lady"; but it is all these songbook musicials; as I said Mamma Mia was very good, but then the rest.

There might be a market; though might is the word, afterall a number open and then close quickly including Ghost. But it is not allowing some original material to get into the West End and, as the Finborough Theatre has found that is a huge range of lesser known old musicals which are can be re-produced and introduced to a new audience. I want a bit more variety.

Went to Sunshine Boys last night and really enjoyed it. The play itself is perhaps rather dated and could do with more really sharp lines. But the performances were great and worth seeing for the two leads certainly.

At the curtain call at the end a few people whipped out their mobiles to take snaps and the staff were quick to stop them. That got me thinking. I know that's a common policy - but why?

Of course photography should be 100% banned during the show, but snapping a curtain call is a sign of appreciation. If people tweet the photo or show it to their friends its good publicity. I can't think of a single downside for the theatre and several upsides.

Anyone got any theories on why theatre are so concerned?

I got 'told off' when I took some photos at the end of 'Houdini'!! I went to see 'The Sunshine Boys' last week and before the show even started, a woman wanted to take a photo of the inside of the theatre, but was told to stop!!

I enjoyed 'The Sunshine Boys'. Danny DeVito was very good. Although it is a bit dated now, I don't think it would work any other way.
