Re: Saving Mr Banks
This is really a Christmas movie and tis one of the few seasons where you can turn a blind eye to the blatant ugliness the movie chooses not to portray and the lies it spins. I am not sure this would go down well at all outside the season to be jolly commercial.
If this was just the story of a genuinely innocent move by Disney on behalf of his youngsters then I would be quite happy to swallow it up its a sugarcoated story and want more but its so blatantly not. Using kids as an excuse for a corporate takeover of property is possibly one of the biggest wolves in sheeps clothing I've seen in a movie. Its closest thing to an evil grannie I have seen in celluloid form.

Re: Saving Mr Banks
Saw this at Holloway Road on Monday with my sistre. We both really enjoyed it, and it has probably been my favourite film of this year. Okay, perhapss there was a lot of artistic licence and fluffiness, but it was made by Disney, what do you expect? Also the film world is hardly known for always sticking to truth and historic fact. I would recommend this to anyone who asked. A solid 9/10.

Re: Saving Mr Banks
Saw this last night at a packed Cineworld, Edinburgh. Latecomers still coming in at 7.10pm which was very annoying.
Enjoyed the film and thought Emma Thomson was excellent. Not my favourite film of the year but didn't find the length too long so must have enjoyed it. 7/10

Re: Saving Mr Banks
Watched this at a pretty full Odeon in Southampton - terrific performances from Hanks and Thompson. Farrell was not very convincing.
Glad to have been alerted to stay until the end to hear the original tape recording featuring PL Travers.
Agree with others that Thompson did well talking in the same clipped tones...
Very enjoyable film...

Re: Saving Mr Banks
Saw this in Wimbledon. Contrary to expectations, I really enjoyed it. An excellent film concerning the difficulties of making a classic book into a film. It was well-written with many comedic moments with a good helping of cheesiness (all the childhood scenes). Tom Hanks was excellent as the tenacious Disney and Emma Thompson (and her furrowed brow) was likewise excellent as the pedantic Mrs Travers. I read all the Mary Poppins books as a child and, although the Mary Poppins film was very different from the books, it was quite possible to love both the books and the film, something PL Travers failed to grasp. I only now understand why the other books had not been made into films – which is a great shame. Paul Giamatti was superb as Ralph, the perpetually happy, but long-suffering driver. A well-deserved 9/10 from me.
The evening was marred by the shambles created by the staff at the Wimbledon Odeon whereby they reserved the first three rows of the main section for holders of Odeon premium tickets only and refused to let anyone else sit in these seats, even if the row only had one person in it. The confusion meant that the auditorium was very slow to fill up. This is the first time they have ever done this. Take it from me, guys – if you had used a first come, first served system with free-seating (like 99% of these screenings) then we would all have been a lot happier. It was a complete and utter fiasco, especially when, just as the film started, they then offered people who were not happy with their seats (i.e. those in the very front row, as they were not allowed to sit in the “reserved rows”) the opportunity to switch to a concurrent screening of the same film in another auditorium. This meant that there were a lot of people exiting just as the film started.

Re: Saving Mr Banks
Yes it started at 6.30pm prompt and cannot see why they allow people to come in so late especailly when it was almost full and they annoyed everyone by searching for seats. Perhaps they were in seeing another film and decided to sneak into ours after their film had finished. The Sparrow wrote:For a film that started at 6.30pm??biggins wrote:Saw this last night at a packed Cineworld, Edinburgh. Re: Saving Mr Banks
I did wonder if they might have been screen hoppers. Cheeky rascals. Hopping or not, that's out of order.
