Saw this at the LFF last year and, like a lot of people here, thought it was absolutely brilliant.

I can see why it's dividing audiences though, given the marketing campaign.
However much you shouldn't necessarily be swayed solely by trailers, if they build up your expectations in one way, and you have no other introduction as to what the film is going to be about, then it's a bit of a misdirection.
People know Tom Hardy predominantly for his action movies, so it makes sense to market the film in that kind of light.

That being said, despite lacking any real action, it does have one of the genre's main tropes, in that it keeps the tension raised pretty much throughout.
Definitely worth watching this month.
Really looking forward to seeing the reaction from wider audiences, and seeing how their reception stacks up against others'.

Sorry, The Sparrow, but I have to disagree with you here. The point of marketing is to entice people into seeing a film/ b*ying a product/etc and I think it's quite legitimate for people to be disappointed when it doesn't deliver. I also think people are allowed to dislike a film for many reasons and being disappointed is as good as any.

I'm seeing the film on Sunday and must say the debate going on here has made me even more keen to see it.

Blame the marketing campaign then, not the film. The two are totally separate entities. The director has next to no say in how his film is to be sold.

Anyway, it's not like any of us pa*d to see the film.

I have no problem with people disliking any film but do so on the merits of the film not the idiots who have badly mishandled the marketing. Steven Knight won't be in charge of which quotes are used on the posters etc

Surely by now, you have seen quotes used on posters etc and they are part of a phrase that originally had a totally different meaning. When you see the full quote in context, it is often meaning the opposite of what the marketing have decided to use it for.

The problem here is that people are disappointed in the film because it didn't match the mishandled marketing.

In recent years the PR people seem to be intent on either misleading people or showing so much in trailers that it ruins the film. Personally, I don't blame the film I blame the PR people.

There is a huge difference.

That actually has no bearing on the argument. Don't forget that we see these films in the hope we spread positive vibes and encourage people to watch it on release. I've heard some vehement comments about this film from people who certainly won't be telling people to go and watch it on April 18th.

Saw this on Monday and I thought it was brilliant. It had a great script and was very well shot and Tom Hardy was fantastic

I'd not seen any of the promotional stuff for this before I went, so I don't know if a lot of the low scores on here are due to it being advertised as something it's not

I went into it expecting a character piece with a guy on the phone for 90 minutes while he's driving and I got exactly what I was expecting.

10/10 for me

Yes, the trailer sells it as a gripping, edge of the seat thriller as do the quotes on the posters.

I'm not sure in what universe this could possibly qualify as a thriller.
The protagonist is a selfish nutjob with Daddy issues who cheats on his wife, barely cares for his one-time mistress, manipulates everyone to get his way, has unfairly brilliant cellphone coverage and his closest ally is some guy who wishes he were Chris O' Dowd.

Are we seriously meant to root for this guy? From start to end I wanted him to lose everything and his project especially to fail dismally.
