Re: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans
I saw this on Friday night at Empire. Maybe I was feeling a bit tired and fed up but it wasn't my type of film at all and I really thought I'd enjoy it. Maybe I just didn't get it. There were some bits that I thought were good (the dancing soul was one of them) but overall I was disappointed and didn't appreciate all the eccentricities like some others. Maybe it was not what I expected.
I do have to say that Cage's performance was outstanding and he really made the film for me - I do like most films that he is in and when he is on-point I rate him quite highly. I thought Val Kilmer was underused, but
his strange turns allowed Cage's character to show he could act as the voice of reason at times. This made him a much more sympathetic character for me, and in many ways it was his actions as a 'good' cop that led him to be a 'bad' lieutenant.
5/10 from me and most of that is for Cage.

Me too, maybe it was the late screening, I was feeling so tired and really didn't get the film. I especially didn't understand why the audience laughed at quite a few places. Is it meant to be a dark comedy? or a drama....I must say Val Kilmer is really losing his shape quite abit. For this kind of film, I rather see Leaving Las Vegas I think.

Re: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans
Saw it last night - very annoying that we were directed to the wrong screen and the rushed over to the right one but the film had already been on for a bit - so never saw what led him to having a bad back.
I thought it was good in parts (the old ladies, Jennifer Coolidge, Frankie, iguanas) but seemed too long, shaky camera work and the pace could have been stepped up.
I wasn't expecting it to be brilliant, but was expecting more.

Re: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans
Saw this last night at Cineworld in Edinburgh. Nice to see marjorymajora and biggins in person.
This was not my cup of tea. Too many drugs and I just thought the story was pretty unrealistic and just too Twin Peaksesque for my wee brain to cope with.
The supporting cast were very good though and they made the movie for me as I didn't much like the main stars here. Nic Cage did act his socks off but he just didn't gel with the other cast to my mind.
5/10 from me.

Re: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans
after seeing the trailer for this I was really excited. Unfortunately this film did not live up to my expectations and left me feeling empty and unsatisfied.
I saw this in Birmingham on the 10th and half way through there was a problem with the projector and the picture shifted off the screen so that we couldn't see what was going on. In remaining parts of the film after this was "fixed", the microphones used on set were visible above the actors heads! did anyone else notice this, is this because they didn't put the image in the right place on the screen or is this awful editing, surely the microphones shouldn't be in the picture at all.
I found parts of the film entertaining, however, throughout other parts I was bored. Overall no where near as good as I was hoping it would be.
4.5/10

Re: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans
Saw this at Cineworld, Edinburgh last night. Confusion at first as we were all told the screening would now be 7pm and not 6.30pm so we went upstairs for a coffee. Fortunately we decided at 6.30 to go to the toilet and found that people were being allowed in and they started the film at 6.40 - so people coming in for 7pm missed the start and would be left wondering why Nicholas Cage was on drugs.
A bit too weird in places for me and found it rather too long. Disappointing.
Nice to meet Aylthonian in person although didn't have much time to chat.

I was at Empire, London at the late screening. Enjoyed the film, though found it was quite long in parts, certain characters could've been cut out without affecting the story at all. Apart from that, enjoyable film. Entertaining, with action in parts. Maybe not suited to a late night screening though.

Re: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans
Saw this at Cineworld Didsbury - wasn't a fan. I don't really like Nicolas Cage anyway so that may have clouded my judgement but I found him particularly gross in this - sweating, hunched & nasally - so how we were supposed to believe Eva Mendes was attracted to him I do not know.
A few of the things I didnt like were - how all three elements that were problems for him (murder case/gambling problems/'whooa guy' all got resolved at the same time - seemed rushed and hurried, I thought the anecdote about the spoon in the shed seemed shoe-horned in to try and add another element to him but was never really followed up, and I thought the end was silly! I really think that the storyline could have been stronger and more believable but instead seemed unrealistic and like it was written in a hurry!
Ha rant over 4/10

Bad bad and and bad (and not in the good sense)
Such a tenuous link to Hurricane Katrina - a very real disaster - I saw no reason whatsoever to set it in that very human crisis.
Werner Herzog has lost it. The crocodile in the road, whilst I liked it, was a lost moment. If the convention of 'strangeness' had been set up from the start, then the audience would have gone with it. I would have enjoyed much more of that world, instead of the 'realistic' one in which everyone surrounding Cage carried/did drugs. I did not b*y into that at all.
I was not at all impressed with Cage. Oh, and the lens of the projector in Glasgow was out of focus and I saw the boom microphone 4 times onscreen, also too much 'shaky cam' going on.
Otherwise, I thought there was some great music - especially the dancing soul music.

Re: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans
Well not really much to add to the other posters. Very disappointing film for me. Poor plot, actors who did not seem to gel at all. Unusual for Nicholas Cage to be in something which to be honest looked more like a cheap made for TV movie with second rate actors rather than a Hollywood film.
So sad to see Val Kilmer has aged so much from his Top Gun days........... now there was a good film. Would have preferred to watch that again than this.
Nice to see Biggins and Alythonian though
Film a poor 4/10 from me
