Re: Free Theatre/Concert Tickets Discussion Thread
Very late code from SFF yesterday and I made a last minute decision to see this last night. Glad I did! Two quite different playlets but both coming together beautifully to reveal Bennett's childhood, his relationship with his parents and the love and affection he obviously held for both of them, and the realisation that his ordinary happy and uneventful childhood was as formative for him as a writer as any exciting one. Very strong performances from Alex Jennings and Jeff Rawle but I thought Gabriel Lloyd was extraordinary as mam.Rainey wrote:http://www.showfilmfirst.com/pin/532931
Untold Stories
Hailed as a ‘delectable double bill of short autobiographical pieces’, Untold Stories is a funny and touching portrait of Alan Bennett and the life he’s led. Hymn is an exquisite, beautifully written memoir of music in childhood, directed by Nadia Fall and with an evocative score by George Fenton, performed by a string quartet. Cocktail Sticks, directed by Nicholas Hytner, is Alan Bennett’s funny and tender reflection on his parents’ desire for a different life. Olivier Award-winning actor Alex Jennings leads the cast as Alan Bennett in both pieces.

I saw Merrily we roll along last night and I have to admit, it was at times very very dry and slow. Loved the concept and the story itself, but some of the musical numbers need to be cut/shortened/changed.
Has anyone seen it?
P.S.: The Third Man - love that avatar of yours

Re: Free Theatre/Concert Tickets Discussion Thread
that Irit8 gig or whatever it was called was a bizarre event of contrasts yesterday at the Tate -
Tiny stage in front of the humungous Tate building, which served to make it look even titchier.
Huge stars like Tom Jones on the titchy stage.
Titchy, nervous unknown buskers preceding huge stars like Tom Jones.
Crowds, who normally ignore buskers all day, cheering and clapping them on today on their stage.
Late on, an African philanthropist appreciating how Londoners cared about children in other countries (the London crowd was pretty small, and some of them laughed at him. Just then a freakish evening wind picked up as if to emphasise that incongruency).
Charity staff worked amazingly hard to get sigs off groups of tourists who had no idea what they were signing up to.
And yes! Tinnie Tempa flying across the Atlantic, rousing the crowd with enthusiasm for the cause and then singing just ONE song, and then flying off again. Mhuhaha!
I left before Jessie came on. I thought Logic were pretty on the button, shame some people were laughing at their punkish acoustic rap (which I might download now). I must admit I wasn't quite sure when he had stopped talking and when he had started rapping the style of his speech was so similar to rap, - when he said ' I seen these wars' as an intro I thought he was reminiscing about Iraq.
Well, it wasn't a concert anyway, it was a protest. It worked of sorts to that end. Shame it had to happen in London where the G8 is happening though, I think the public would appreciate it more in a provincial county rather than a group of largely disinterested Londoners and passing toursits. I wonder if Tinnie Tempah had time to add his sig.

Re: Free Theatre/Concert Tickets Discussion Thread
I went yesterday as well to the agit8 thingy.
I got there just before Tinie tempah. And he done one song (at least I heard that before )
Then Paulo nutini. He was good. But never heard the songs he sang before.
Jessie j. Was by far the best. She sang 3 songs (all her own )
With very little instruments added.
Disappointed with event. But Jessie j was brilliant so made up for the rest.
(Ps they had BBQ there smelt lovely but was awful )

Re: Free Theatre/Concert Tickets Discussion Thread
I had some complimentary tickets for Viva Forever today and took my daughter as she really wanted to go, she did really enjoy it, but she is only 9, it was just the 2 of us so I think just having mum all to herself made it all the better. I however, felt it was even worse than the first time I saw it, the song arrangements are very poor and there are not enough Spice Girls songs. I the performer who played Simone was an understudy and I wasn't keen on her performance either. I can see why its closing.
Preferred Cinema's now Paignton or Exeter!
