I have been absent for a long time and I see you have been a great inspiration with a great mindset! Look a little harder, I am sure you can see the wagon :)

Those 5K runs you mentioned in the past, were they the Parkruns?

Wow MrGlass that is rather a lot of good advice so I am listening one again. Well tomorrow will have to be my treat day as meeting a friend for coffee and cakes  oh gosh I am going off the rails before I get started! I am also going to Windermere on Sunday for a boat ride plus a trip on a steam train then lunch out but I can make healthy choices and do plenty of walking while I'm there. So all the other days I can eat healthily and need to get back into exercising again. It's amazing that a few years back when we were all on a roll I had no problems deciding on menus but now I can't think what to have

Looking forward to getting into the zone again and chatting to friends again. As for ejwrank's choice of cake it was very healthy looking and the only reason I didn't have one was I had only finished eating a rather substantial lunch with prettyxcool 15 minutes before.

I did a couple of organised 5K races, but the regular ones were all parkruns. I'm hoping to get back into it when the fringe season is over - at the moment, I don't have time to eat or sleep let alone run, come September, the excuses dry up!

I'm going off the rails today because it's my birthday and you know what, sod it. But after that, I will get back on that blasted wagon with you all.

It would be nice to schedule some rest time - I think part of my problem is I often just don't sleep, and that does my metabolism no good. It also means I have no time for exercise. Once I get into September, I want to have at least one proper night from theatre criticism and go parkrunning more often. Or any running, really.

Happy Birthday and enjoy it to the full! You can stay away from this thread for one day, lol.

You are absolutely right about the importance of sleep and its affect on the metabolism rate. And not just that, we need at least 7 hours sleep prr night to enable our body and mind to recover, repair and strengthen from the days stresses on our body. Good call on the sleep...so important.

How about a challenge if you up for it. Ive done 18 park runs. Not sure how many you have done but perhaps we could have a race to getting the 50 parkrun t shirt :) just an incentive thought! I wont be able to do it every week myself as i have squash league games and coaching in some Saturday mornings. But its still going to be a target for me to earn that shirt as quick as i can!

If any of you are interested in taking part in the completely free public park run events every Saturday morning all over UK, you can find your local parkrun here:

http://www.parkrun.org.uk/events/events/

Wow, its even more huge now then when I last checked it out. I didnt even realise there is a parkrun just down the bloody road from me! I used to go all the way to Kingston to run one of these, now I have a choice of four within a couple of miles of me. Every one of these short 5k park runs have a great vibe, staffed by volunteers who perform various duties including timing your runs and taking photographs which are posted up on the website. It's all free because it is sponsored by various companies and a charity (Alzheimer's Research).

We're doing a 7 km Memory Walk around the Tower of London on Saturday 5 September. If you're a Londoner, why don't you join our team? Not only would you do something for your health, but you'd also support a great cause - a world without dementia.

Btw, I'm told I am pre-diabetic and have to do more exercise and reduce my portion sizes, especially on carbs! Help!

Kind of you Diane65 to say that my carrot cake was a healthy choice even it wasn't true. I will however take a bit of credit getting this thread back in action and I am very good at telling others what to do (i.e. I can be bossy) and lo and behold, Mr G and Diane have restarted it! And glad to see asamaic and Beate here too. I think all that walking at Windermere is the perfect excuse for a nice treat at the end so no guilt please, Diane!

Parkrun is free because of the volunteers rather than the sponsors - whenever there aren't enough volunteers, the runs get cancelled. I would urge everyone to consider volunteering after racking up, say, 10 parkruns. You get points for running, but you also get points for volunteering, so you don't lose out from that point of view.

I'm afraid I won't be running this weekend - partially because I'm exhausted and don't want to, but mainly because I managed to fall up a flight of stairs and gash my leg open. You read that correctly - up, not down. I'm so accident prone sometimes! I must admit, I'm not unhappy to have a valid excuse not to run. :p

I've emailed to move my Friday press tickets so I can have a night in. I reckon I've earned one.

Might not have been eating brilliantly over the past few days, but I've been logging my food, which is the main thing. If TheyCallMeMrGlass is going to bang on about parkrun (in the nicest possible way, MrG), I'm going to harp on about MyFitnessPal again. You can track macros as well as just calories, so if you are trying to keep an eye on carbs, Beate, you may find it helpful.

Yes, MFP works best with a smartphone, but you can just use the website from any computer or device if you prefer.

Logging what you actually eat can be a real wake up call in terms of managing your diet.

Now it's my turn to ramble, so I shall end it there. So very tired...

Whatever you do, behave better than me! :p
