Re: Cowboys and Aliens

#61 Post by tsoiboy » Mon Aug 15, 2011 11:41 pm

I saw this at Greenwich Odeon and the cinema was between 80-90% full and the screening started promptly at 18:30.

I did not know what to expect as I knew it was based on a graphic novel. As the title says "Cowboys and Aliens" and I felt the film does what the label says. Cowboys and Aliens with a few indians thrown in for good measure.

The look of the film was good and the dialogue was reasonable especially when one considers the source material from a graphic novel. Which usually does not translate too well to screen. Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig did good jobs and I enjoyed their performances. The Aliens looked good as well.

Unfortunately there was no real good explanation of why the Aliens were on Earth and a few holes in the plot.

Considering that this was a mash up of genres of Western and Sc-fi. I thought it worked very well especially the Western aspect and I was definitely entertained. As I love Westerns and Sc-Fi movies, why not a mash up.

I enjoyed the ending with the hero riding into the distance. Like others I would have liked a little more humour but for me playing it straight also worked.

Im sure you'll get in dude. Whenever im convinced its overbooked i always get in. Make of that what you will. If they are overbooked though, then go home, get 2 tv's next to eachother, put True Grit on one and Alien vs Predator on the other, and just shake your head between them. Its about the same experience
Very funny, but a bit generous mentioning True Grit when discussing this.

I thought it was terrible, nowhere near enough fun for a film with this premise and far too cliched and full of plotholes for a film taking itself so seriously.

X men, Thor and Captain America have all managed to play things fairly straight and were lots of fun as well, this was just hard work.
Well considering 1) I havn't seen True Grit, but heard awesome things about it and 2)The pure western scenes at the start were by far the best parts of the film, it seemed fair to bring a bit of decency into my analogy

Well Firefly was an excellent mash up of sci fi and western. It made allowances and exemptions to both genre's in order to allow both genre's to become part of the same society. They both felt like they lived in the same time without becoming forced or becalmed

With Cowboy's and Aliens, it really did feel like 2 films intercut with eachother, and both films contained alot of information and references that blatantly contradicted what the other film was saying, which just became very messy. Mashing up is easily done, but looking for parts of both genre's and jigsawing all the necessary parts from both into one film and one tone is a step this just missed

Go in with low expectations and you won't be disappointed.

But after all, its what you think of the movie and it may not be everyone's cup of tea but you could really enjoy it.

I hope you do.

Well a unanimous verdict of Cow and Alien dung. I enjoyed it though but maybe that's because I like crap...mmm craaap.

I have to say I am enjoying most of your one liner reviews. I wish the film had the same kind of quality dialogue you guys are exhibiting! Best ones:

"One of the main things i took away from the movie tonight was the clouds... they never moved. I admit I became quite obsessed about this by the end."

"put True Grit on one and Alien vs Predator on the other, and just shake your head between them. Its about the same experience"

And btw I like Beate's OH taste, lol.
