Re: The Wolfman
Well I just got back from the screening, what can I say?? I had high hopes, but it kind of fell quite flat. I am not surprised they are showing it in Feb, if it was in the summer or christmas it would have been trampled all over the box office by other films. The highlights of course are Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins, but the plots pretty bad and even the wolf special effects I found quite bad. At some points, I wondering are they just using an old fashioned mask instead of CGI??

Re: The Wolfman
I don't usually watch this type of film, and I found myself jumping quite often all the way through.
Fairly good story line, and enjoyed most of it. Couldn't help but constantly notice the lead character looks a lot like Michael McIntyre.
7/10.

Its fun though!AYBG wrote:Critic-bashing is dumb. There, I said it.

About the screening, I was rather surprised at it being rather full, about 90%. Why can't credit crunch screenings be that full? you're lucky to find more than 6 at those screenings and they start at the same time.

Re: The Wolfman
Didn't really like this movie at all. Poor special effects, plot was limited too, it really didn't feel like a movie made now, more like in the 70s, especially with the special effects. A bit of a letdown, the cinema was as well, it was cold.

Re: The Wolfman
Seen Wolfman last night in a hot Cardiff Cineworld. They used one of the larger cinemas and it was about 90% full.
As a fan of the horror (not slasher) films was looking forward to this - but as people above have commented, the plot was flat, poor Antony Hopkins accent was all over the place and the CGI has been done better in older films, the facial transformation looked just like the early black and white ones.
The plot did remind me of the Werewolf film with Ollie Reed in, where he played the part of the Wolfman, what do you think? Thought the actor even looked the same dark, brooding, tortured soul.
Would give it 6/10

Re: The Wolfman
Bah, can't believe so many negatives. Okay so i'm easily pleased, but for me it did exactly what it says on the tin. Good atmosphere in a virtually full cinema (surprising with the late start) and plenty of hairy moments judging by the way the girl behind kept launching herself out of her chair. It could perhaps have had better CGI if you want to be picky but i loved the overall feel of it and loved the settings, hurray for spookyfied Chatsworth.
Got thoroughly engrossed by it all which was quite an achievement after a very long day and a drab watching of 'Everybodys Fine' earlier in the evening.
Perhaps i've found my niche! and no i'm not an out and out horror fan but don't mind the odd scare (keeps the adrenalin pumping).

Re: The Wolfman
Totally agree with chrisballans- think every1 else is missing the point. The film was supposed to be a homage to the old fashioned universal horror films of the 40/50's. I thought it was a good mixture of cgi but more importantly PROPER SPECIAL EFFECTS through make up by the excellent Rick Baker. He did the original transformation effects in An American Werewolf in London (which even though was in the 80's, hasnt been bettered). The tranformation in the mental hospital were awesome.
Agree that A Hopkins was a bit all over the place, B Tel Toro a bit too serious but Hugo Weaving (of Matrix Fame) as Police Detective was excellent.

Re: The Wolfman
My bf and I went to see this at Shaftesbury Avenue yesterday evening. I didn't manage to get tickets to Everybody's Fine so I went at 7:30 to the Azerbaijani folk music event.
Back to the film, my boyfriend enjoyed it, but I thought the plot should have been better. Midway through the film there was a problem with the projection and we couldn't see the upper part of the film. I was also wondering about the quality of the image projected...and the sound was too loud (I had to improvise and make earplugs out of a paper tissue).
My bf was quite annoyed with me on our way home because I moan about how disappointed I am with most screenings I've seen lately. sigh.

Re: The Wolfman
It might have something to do with the fact that the Credit Crunch screenings are mainly of films that are obviously dire, and look like they went almost straight to DVD. I would p*y to not see pretty much all of them, let alone waste my time and transport costs on them.steve9872 wrote:Its fun though!AYBG wrote:Critic-bashing is dumb. There, I said it.![]()

Same with many of the new release previews, such as The Boys Are Back which has no chance of being more than an OK but bland film, ditto Invictus, or The Lovely Bones which I have on good authority from trustworthy film obsessives is a complete mess after the first 30 minutes.
The jury is still out on The Wolfman for me until the reviews come in from people who can be relied upon. That is one film I would have taken a punt on for a preview if I'd been able to attend.

Re: The Wolfman
You are pretty dismissive about a lot of films people liked! Most people here really liked Invictus, there are mixed reviews on The Lovely Bones, but I happen to see it a second time tonight so I guess we are all different!
