The leaves are the thickness of rosemary but in a spidery way rather than the structure of rosemary.

Diane, I scrolled through your link and spotted one 7 rows down and it has white flowers (or maybe they are pink--I'm not sure!) and when enlarged it does have 'spidery' green leaves -- could this be what you mean?

No sorry it's not that one, it isn't a geranium but has the pretty flowers like those but possibly not quite as wide. I am tempted to go for a walk and see if anyone has it in their garden and take a picture as it's driving me mad. Thanks so much

It might even be a shrub but I do think it is a perennial as it dies off and comes back each year.

OK -- you say it might be a shrub so could it be a potentilla? I fear this game could go on and on!!!

No and I know what you mean - I will go on an early morning walk and take a picture from someone's garden and hopefully I will spot it somewhere otherwise I will drive everyone round the twist.

They have named it arabis caucasica on this image but when I look up that it is not this plant but this is the one I'm after.

What?

You are certainly becoming a mysterious man first we had the chopped onion red herring in the chocolate cake and now this
Just got myself a lovely lilac tree this weekend all planted up now in this
http://www.diy.com/nav/garden/garden-d- ... m-13588637 (but the larger sized pot). Went to Althorp House yesterday and once again got inspired. They had these outside the front door
http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk ... 2cm-833414 but painted black with box in the middle and underplanted with some pretty white flowers (don't know what they are called). I haven't seen a barrel planter for years but know working out as to whether it would fit in with my scheme or if it is too big for my garden as mine is a tad smaller than the Spencer household.

We are obviously very out of fashion, Diane, as we had a number of these barrels which I planted over the years -- one in the front and 2 in the back garden -- only 1 left now as the others succumbed to the rain and disintegrated but on the whole they lasted about 15-20 years and that was with no treatment or particular care! I have a rather lopsided rosemary in the one that's left and will plant around it with annuals. Be sure you know exactly where you want it as they are difficult to move without taking out all the soil out first--ours were/are larger than the one you pictured -- they were called half barrels.
We've got a nice lilac which we have let get too tall so it is more like a tree than a bush but it is pretty with purple flowers outlined in white.
I mowed the grass, which is mainly , weeds yesterday so the garden looks lots better in spite of the lack of decent grass. I've moved all the primroses that I had in pots close to the house to give me a lift on dull grey winter mornings to a secluded spot in the garden and I'm hoping they come back up next year. In spite of lots of clearing out in the autumn the garden is now full again with all our trees in leaf (after lots of apple and pear blossom) so our cat is much happier with loads of places to hide. Unfortunately a fox has also decided it is a nice place for lounging so I look out to see Paddy on the bench with a fox quite close by (neither particularly interested in the other) but I still dash out to 'rescue' Paddy and send the fox off to terrorise other gardens, I fear.
