Yes it is worth going round the Island of Malta and visiting the sites. You can also take a harbour cruise or an open top bus round some of the places. There is also a day trip to the Island of Gozo which was well worth a visit. My daughter had gone on the day trip to Sicily a few years ago and it was calm when they left very early in the morning but when they came back at night to do the crossing there was a horrendous storm and everyone was seasick!! So I have never been on that as I can get seasick even with calm weather !! :X

Hope you enjoy your holiday there.

Thanks
exactly the reason why I left Amsterdam. those horrible tourist everywhere speaking whatever language and the only word you could understand is 'coffeshop' . donde el coffeshop, wo ist der coffeeshop. yes, those are my fake tourist impressions...

Amsterdam is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, so please go and explore (whilst being high and drunk). Go to the park, rent a bike and go cycle. don't fall into the tourist traps (museums, RLD, canalboats). Oh, and don't forget to go to de Jordaan. Beautiful part of Amsterdam.

Enjoy!

Going to Italy next week for 14 days but unfortunately not "500 DAYS OF SUMMER". As I am not "THE SOLOIST" it will be a "COUPLES RETREAT" with just "MARLEY AND ME". It is all inclusive so I had better not drink too much at the free bar in case I start telling people "THE UGLY TRUTH" and want to go "12 ROUNDS" with them and call them "INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS". Can you "IMAGINE THAT" it would be a poor "STATE OF PLAY" and I would have to do a "FAST AND FURIOUS" escape from my "PUBLIC ENEMIES" . I would end up with a "GIGANTIC" "HANGOVER" throw "UP" and have to do some "SUNSHINE CLEANING".

I'll just pack my suitcase and "AWAY WE GO". ;)

Staying in a hotel on the coast about an hour from Naples. Got trips to Pompeii, Vesuvius, and Sorrento included in the holiday as we are Saga people now. We motored from Edinburgh down to Folkstone across to France, through Switzerland and all around the main cities of Italy right down to Sorrento ourselves a few years ago. When we did the Amalfi coast drive my husband didn't enjoy it as he was too busy watching the road -very,very narrow and the Italians drive at great speed. So this time we are doing the trips by coach. The Almafi drive and Capri are not included but we will go on optional excursion to do this as we love Italy and are looking forward to seeing these places again. We have done other holidays to Italy several times including Lake Como etc. Marvellous scenery and, of course, great food. The diet will have to wait again. ;)

A coach tour sounds like a great idea as the roads are indeed narrow and yes the Italians do like to drive fast round the bends!
Sounds like a wonderful trip, hope you and your hubby have a lovely. Enjoy yourselves.

European Xmas Markets By Train?

#69 Post by Ms Thrifty » Wed Sep 16, 2009 9:46 am

I am trying to plan the long weekend OH and I usually spend, in early December, visiting a Xmas market. However, I am running out of ideas for places we would actually like to go and can reach by train. We have already visited the markets in Bonn/Cologne, Strasbourg and Tallinn. We prefer Germany but there's a limit to the destinations you can reach in reasonable time without flying - otherwise Nuremburg would top the wish-list. Has anyone been to other markets they can recommend, please? Northern France and the Benelux countries would also be fine.

I have been to the christmas market at Valkenburg (in Holland). It has a lovely atmosphere as it all takes place in the caves there. I seem to remember that stalls are mostly lit by candlelight.
We did not go by train but as part of a coach tour/river cruise that also included Maastricht. This is also a very nice place, and not as 'touristy' as a lot of Dutch towns. They also have a winter market.

There are a few details of both markets on this site
http://www.lowfareflights.co.uk/Dutch%2 ... arkets.htm

It is a little out of date, but it also mentions some other town that strangely has an annual Christmas 'Dickens Festival' .
