Mockingjay part 1 is the weakest film in the franchise so far in my opinion. By splitting the book in two they have magnified the problems of the book in the sense that not much happens in the first part and the second half is much more action-packed. There are two brief action sequences but for the most part the film is rather uneventful and spends most of the time setting up the final part of the series. 6.5/10.

oh it's not exactly an after credit scene as such but if you wait till the very end of the credits, there's some more of the animated Mockingjay symbol (as there was at the end of Catching Fire)

Saw Mockingjay Pt 1 last night in Wandsworth. I have seen the first two movies, but, not having read any of the books, had no idea what to expect from this one. I found it a lot darker and much more political than the first two and felt a bit lost at the beginning as I couldn't remember a lot of what went on in Catching Fire (wish they'd have started with a short catch-up). Jennifer Lawrence was great as Katniss but, for me, the real star was the wonderful Philip Seymour Hoffman (RIP) - I loved his character compared to Julianne Moore's character which was completely one-dimensional. I felt the film was very dependent on both predecessors (Hunger Games & Catching Fire) and the sequel (Mockingjay Pt 2) – and so didn’t stand up by itself too well. I would say that, unlike some sequels, you have to watch the first two to get an inkling of what’s going on. I enjoyed the film, but not as much as the first two but am looking forward to the next one, which I hope will go out with a bang. 7/10

Just saw this in one of the first showings in Hong Kong.

This was pretty good. Yeah you need to see the previous films before it or it wont make much sense. Just like the last harry potter this is setting you up for part two. Bring it on.

[RAZORBACK]

As expected this doesn't really do much more than set things up for part 2 consequently it's difficult to view this as anything other than the weakest instalment so far.

That said, the material doesn't feel like it's been stretched as thin as say 'The Hobbit' and it's still a solid movie in it's own right but viewed in isolation it's nothing special either so overall 7/10 feels like a fair & appropriate score...
