Sorry, Beate and c_t, I can't help with Paris hotels (though would have thought a couple of members here might be able to) or Iceland, but if Tripadvisor doesn't have the info you need, it does have forums where you can ask.
I find the information one can find online a bit overwhelming, I *know* this forum is "online" too but I find it easier here to ask for advice/have a discussion.

for paris hotels have a look on website below; they also have budget ones like etap and f1, worth a look

http://www.accorhotels.com/gb/booking/h ... aris.shtml

last year I was lucky enough to b*y a voucher off ebay for the marriot at charles deGaulle, there are a few hotels here and there is a bus from the airport (free) to get there. I got a visitor pass for the three days I was there which was useful for travel to city and within.

I would recommend it yeah if they want to go to the museums and the Sistine chapel. I booked mine from here http://biglietteriamusei.vatican.va/musei/tickets/do

There was another queue in St Peters Square for the actual church, not sure if you can b*y tickets for that in advance but the queue is massive. I didnt do that one.
But if you are already in the Vatican you don't need to queue up to go to St Paul's. After you finish the Sistene Chapel there are two exits go to the right and you end up in St Paul's. Also we had a tour guide who was very informative. But definitely order your tickets beforehand to skip the queues.
Thanks for that! I think I'm going to consider Rome as my parents said it was beautiful shame about some people they encountered who either ripped them off or wouldn't help.

There is ALOT of that in Rome. I was quite shocked by the unhelpfulness and the attitude. Not seen that anywhere else I've been abroad - most go out their way to help you. When I was at the Vatican, an Italian approached me to b*y museum tickets from him. When I refused, he asked where I am from. I initially ignored him but he chased after me telling me he doesn't bite so I gave in and responded with "London." And just because I didn't b*y his tickets, he responded "London bloody London." What a helpful comment to make (and just for the record London f**king ROCKS). People seem to think that if you are from London, you are loaded.

I would completely advise against tour guides or anything in Rome - I found the whole lot to be rip off. My Eyewitness Guide to Rome was a real gem and exploring it on my own and at my own pace made it all that better. Rome is definitely beautiful - no doubt about that but there is ALOT to see. If you get a tour guide for everything, you'll either have to be ultra rich or consider bankruptcy upon your return to the UK.

While I was exploring the Roman Forum, they were closing (they close an hour before sunset) and the tour guide hadn't even finished the tour that people had pa*d for. She hadn't even taken them to the main bit and they were being asked to leave. Now if I had pa*d money for that and then wasn't able to see the main bits of popular attractions such as the Roman Forum, I would have been pissed. Hence I'd strongly recommend exploring Rome by yourself.

I am not sure what part you are referring too but if it is from within the Square then I'm not quite sure what you saw. I am someone who HATES walking and I would completely disagree with this on all accounts. There are steps, but not as many as you make it sound. St. Paul's Cathedral in London has far steeper steps inside in my personal opinion.

canadian_turtle wrote:Guys, I need your help finding cheap yet decent accommodation in Central Paris!

I initially planned to book a hostel room for my nights there but my mum is joining me for the journey so obviously this isn't an option anymore. However often a hotel can be booked nearly just as cheap as the price will be per room, not per person.

Requirements:

- Either close to Gare du Nord or within walking distance of a metro station that's on a direct line to Gare du Nord

- Close to a metro station that's on a direct line to Disneyland in Marne La Vallee

- Close (preferably walking distance) to Seine and some of the sights (Eiffel Tower etc). We only have 1 full day in Paris itself and want to make the most of taking in the atmosphere without having to travel far

- Elevators (don't remember what it's like in Paris but in London it can be a pain finding a hotel with an elevator and I don't want to force my mum to walk up endless flights of stairs)

- Free wifi for my laptop

- Free breakfast

- Cheap!

Any personal recommendations from past journeys? Is there a budget chain hotel like Travelodge in the UK?

Many thanks guys o/
It would help if you put in your price budget in either EUR or GBP as your idea of cheap might not be somebody else's idea of cheap.

Also I think you will need to be abit more realistic in your requirements if you are looking for cheap i.e. Travelodge prices. Alot of what you've mentioned are things that I pa*d for £159 per night in Rome in a 4* hotel with all the above was included (plus extras!). Of course, Paris isn't Rome but it is still a major tourist attraction and I would think prices would be somewhat similar.

Here is one I see alot of people rave about and one I would consider if visiting Paris but even at 3*, it's not the cheapest: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Revi ... rance.html (it's not got free breakfast either from what I can see although there is complimentary tea and coffee, depends what you need for breakfast and whether taking cereal or something from here can be something to consider to lower your costs).

One of the things I tend to do is go through tripadvisor, select either top 100 B&B's OR hotels etc in the city I'm visiting and then work my way down based on reviews. You can narrow it down to your price range and from there onwards look top down from best reviews to lowest. That's how I came to my decision for my hotel in Rome and I did not regret it. It will normally mention if there are offers of wifi / breakfast. Also visit booking.com and put your requirements in there. They're very good at narrowing down by requirements and tend to have alot of free breakfast/wifi offers. Cross reference any reviews on tripadvisor though, I found the people reviewing on booking.com tend to be abit too lenient for my liking.

I've not been to Iceland but recently went to a talk on it at The Holiday Show and got a free book on the Northern lights (it includes a fair bit about Iceland) and it looks simply stunning. It maybe worth taking a look at www.discover-the-world.co.uk
I'm happy to forward the book onto you (its very thin but informative) and I can collect it when I see you at Easter.

I stayed here in Paris last year http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j& ... EChF2P87IQ its about 1 minute walk from Vaneau metro stop so very safe for 2 females and breakfast is included in the price, it has a tiny lift but only a small hotel so its fine and the staff are lovely.

c_t is speaking dirty cheap (<£25/night)... and this is why it's not easy to find ;)

(and Paris is definitely more expensive than Rome)

That was hostel prices, however, my mum's coming along now so we're now looking at budget hotels :) I've stayed in Marne La Vallee before which was only about 50 per night before, though I understand central Paris will be more expensive. I didn't list a price as I wasn't sure what "cheap" would be for Paris. I do know whowever that wherever I stayed in budget hotels across the world they always had wifi and breakfast included, so it's not as impossible to find as it may sound. Thanks for all the replies, I'll have a good read at work today! o/
