I saw this at a respectfully full Metrocentre tonight.

Nicholas Cage's portrayal of the amusingly corrupt yet dedicated detective was masterful. His facial expressions were fantastic especially during his drug induced hallucination scenes. The part where Nic loses his rag with the old ladies was fantastically funny as was the "Shoot him again" bit.

The most amusing part about the film though was the speed in which every aspect that was wrong with the detective's life was turned around from being unremittingly bad to extraordinarily good. All his problems seemed to evaporate within a couple of minutes.

I agree with the other posters comments about Val Kilmer having run to seed since his Top Gun days - I did not even realise it was him during the film until I saw his name in the credits at the end and then thought back to who he could have been playing!!

I give this film 8 out of 10. o/

I agree with the posts. If you are a Nicholas Cage fan you will love this-also had a touch of the Johnny Depp's in the performance.

I had very low expectations but it was OK to watch. I liked the iguanas! and the crocs! and the fish at the end (that was real i expect) Was mainly following the storyline with Frankie.

How could a film about an out there, drug taking, granny threatening cop by Werner Herzog with turned up to 11 performance by Nicolas Cage be so boring.

Tempted to leave a few times, but just about glad I stayed.

There were some good moments in there, the iguana scene, the couple outside the club, the granny questioning, the soul break dancing!!!! Just remembering those bits makes me wonder how good the film could have been.

The rest of it though just plodded along. Just how many times do we have to see Cage steal drugs from someone?

Also thought they'd bottled it by making the Lieutenant not bad enough, tired of the whole bad back and dog walking plot points.

After the iguana scene, when I started watching it as a comedy, it improved, but even then I wasn't sure if I was laughing with it or at it. (The scene at the end when some of the loose ends are tired up is pure Naked Gun)

Let me explain... I was only sniffing... I've had a bit of a cold.... :D

As Spanner has already told you, I actually liked this film. It is a clever, dark-twisted thriller. It’s definitely not a film for everyone, but I was surprised that it was one for me.
Nicolas Cage's portrayal of an immoral, corrupt cop in New Orleans was fabulous. This role seems to be one to which he is best suited. He doesn't go overboard, but comes pretty close to it. Terence (Cage) has interesting hallucinations of iguanas and break-dancing, gun-toting thugs.
Werner Herzog has made a moody cop drama that is more compelling for its visual touches -the crocodile's view on the RTA scene for instance, was pure genius.
New Orleans (just after Hurricane Katrina) is the perfect setting for this story of a corrupt police officer. Having watched the film, I can't think of another place for it to be shot. The squalor depicted was matched by the depravity and depths to which Cage's character stooped to achieve his own immoral stance.

9/10 from me.

The screening at the Apollo Piccadilly Circus tonight took place in the small screen 1, with the last two rows reserved for film company people. This led to an amusing scene with a couple who first sat next to us then the husband said "Come on, they have reserved these rows for us". The wife was protesting, saying it wasn't right, so I turned round and asked whether they were with the film company. He said yes and I said then they were fine to sit there. The wife looked at me totally appalled and said "You mean he is right and I am wrong?" "Yes, sorry". "God, I HATE it when I am wrong!" :giggle:

I thought the film was very interesting. I wouldn't give it the highest mark, but Nicholas Cage was very good. I didn't quite get why he would have a prostitute as a girlfriend (either you are her pimp or you want her to stop, surely?) but you knew it was going to be quirky the moment the iguanas started singing! I was ready to give the film 6.5 but the ending totally ruined the film in my opinion. I still don't understand it either, so I am giving it a 6/10. Btw, has Val Kilmer filled out or what!

Saw this at Apollo tonight - sat with Beate and her OH - always nice to bump into Beate. Was very impressed with the comfy seats, only spoilt by the person behind shifting in his seat periodically and kicking the back of my seat in the process!

It was a very slow and confusing start, but I actually enjoyed it once it started going, and thought it was funny with the hallucinations. It was also comical how all his problems was resolved at the same time. Thought Nick Cage played the part very well. But the film's ending did leave me feeling that there should have been more. And was that Val Kilmer? 7/10

Yep, a very bloated one!

And sorry I moved away from you, prettyxcool, but they were kicking my seat too and I prefer no one in front if I can help it, even in the Apollo!

Gosh, yes he was very bloated!

Yeah, what's with all the kicking with so roomy seats - did they have such long legs!

Hey, no worries, me too, hate anyone in front of me and behind me! :P

I enjoyed this a lot. It was miles better than the series of turkeys I've watched so far in 2010 (and actually funnier than most of the 'comedies' amongst those turkeys).

Nic Cage was excellent, a masterclass in playing a complete nut job and very convincing. The bit with the old ladies when he was having a shave really amused me for some reason in particular.

8.5/10 from me.
