Watched it, hated it. Really really hated it, it was like The Matrix sequels' Zion elements, boring, plotless, poorly paced rambling, rather average CGI, except for JEFF BRIDGES' FACE OMG WTF?!?!?!
Michael Sheen was a ball of fun, saving about 5 minutes of this film, but my goodness, the other 120 minutes were just, well, awful.

This review doesn't surprise me. The original was a poor film, it was popular because it was something different for it's time. I see this on Tuesday, I'm looking forward to the effects, but not the actual film!

I'm not old enough to know from being there, but from what I've read, is it true that Tron was a failure at the box office? It apparently gained popularity off of the video game that was based on it. Looking at the box office numbers from 1982, it certainly didn't set the world alight.

That's Disney's call then, not Bridges'. A Tron sequel and his involvement in it was never going to have anything to do with the Academy Awards. Sure, it's a bonus for Disney, but it's nothing more than that. He wouldn't even have gotten more money from Mickey & Co as he surely signed on for this well before receiving his golden statuette. And let's be honest here, this movie isn't about a Jeff Bridges performance- it's about the special effects.

Nobody goes to see these blockbusters for the cast, but whether the film is good or bad the dude will abide!

I promise you, Helen Mirren and Judi Dench do not equal box office gold. Not even in the UK and surely not in the US. Maybe the studios cast them for some actual acting cred, but it's not for the money. And don't tell me that Disney wouldn't have wanted Jeff Bridges for a Tron sequel with or without the existence of Crazy Heart. Your original statement was about Bridges selling out after his Oscar, my point is that he hasn't. Unless this was all part of some plan he had back in 1981 or so.

I didn't quite mean that, what I meant was I really don't recall Jeff Bridges anchoring a tentpole Hollywood pic (He didn't anchor Iron Man) and maybe Blown Away, but that didn't do well...
It's not for box office but the studio execs think they are adding some "class" to their big budget films.

(I just dread he does a Nicholas Cage *sigh*)

Just seen this in 3d at the Empire and they said I must not say anything about it until 10pm tomorrow night. Something about an embargo. I wonder if anything will happen to me if just say original Tron fans will love this, in an awesome way? Maybe I should keep quiet?.

Oh OK, like I said, fans of Tron will dig the hell out of this from its pure nostalgia and upgrades to the "the grid". But I do feel non fans will be scratching their heads of what all the fuss is about. I really enjoyed it and it had the same atmosphere as the original. Too much talk about the evolution of the grid had me yawning. Though I am very anti 3D for non animated films, the use of 3d is very effective here because this is mostly computer animation and that is also perfect for this medium. Having said that, I think I will still enjoy it more in 2D. Jeff Bridges is great, he does'nt have to do much, he's the Dude remember. The CGI Jeff looks like CGI Jeff but thats fine because he is an avatar. Although there are scenes of young Jeff in the real world, the lighting is darkened to make him look more convincing. The score was excellent although very similar to The Dark Knight and Inception. Another soundtrack I'll be happily adding to my library.

Really enjoyed it but it could probably have better pacing. So I give it 7.5/10.

I'm guessing hardcore fans would probably give it 8-9/10 and non fans 4-5/10 though.

Interesting debate you guys are having at 2am in the morning! I beg to differ on these actors "selling out", they can do what the hell they like, what obligation do they have to make films we want them to make? Its their living and they make compromises, balancing big paycheck days for "revenue making sequels/blockbusters" with a lower p*y self indulgent films. Its fine, its a living. Plus it all depends on the choice of scripts they get offered. Jeff Bridges has been the Dude long before Big Lebowski for me ever since I saw him in Thuderbolt and Lightfoot when I was a kid. I agree his name doesnt guarantee box office success but he is high caliber with an increasingly big screen presence in his older age. Nick Cage is the same, he aint selling out, he's making the same mix of popcorn trash, arty and cool movies as he did from the beginning, and no one can drawl like he can

But really what difference does any of it make? We're not talking about anyone who was some kind of indie film darling to begin with. On that note, what is Parker Posey up to these days?
