Re: IT Help, Please
Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Fortunately, it was a lot easier. There is no button on my routher I can see, but I tweaked every cable three times, switched off at the source for 5 seconds, and by a miracle the green lights came back on! Yay!

Looks like the problem is unresolved - this new lead is no better than the previous one, and the battery is not re-charging as it should. I am beginning to think that there is a more serious problem with my little laptop. You get used to things, don't you? I've had this laptop a few years now. It doesn't owe me anything, but I'm comfortable with it, and don't want to upgrade it just yet. I'll have to see if I can get it sorted, or else it's curtains!

It sounds like you just need a new battery. Rechargeable laptop batteries have a finite lifespan and since your laptop is old, it is the most likely reason given the symptoms you describe.andrews wrote: Looks like the problem is unresolved - this new lead is no better than the previous one, and the battery is not re-charging as it should. The best way to determine if its the battery is to take the battery out. Then plug in your power and see if it boots up normal. If it does then, get a new battery. If it doesnt then ok...perhaps the laptop does not permit power through without a battery installed. Next, need to determine if your adaptor is healthy, did you replace the whole adaptor or just the cable?

Re: IT Help, Please
I have a Dell and suffer lots of problems. Do you mind me asking what your typing problem is please?andrews wrote:It's not a Dell, Cortone. It's a Toshiba Satellite Pro and probably well past its sell-by date. However, I have a new lead and power supply, and things are back to normal now. Funnily enough, that typing problem has now been rectified as well. I thought that was the keyboard.Cortone wrote:Got lost in the discussion - is your laptop a Dell? Re: IT Help, Please
My laptop isn't a Dell - it's a Toshiba. The typing problem is unusual (well it is to me) - when I am having trouble with the battery re-charging, I am typing away as usual without looking at the screen, and then look up to find that virtually every other letter has been missed out from the text I am writing. So I have to edit all thr typos. Very irritating!

Re: IT Help, Please
Sorry my message was a little muddled. I knew you don't have a Dell. I meant to make a general comment that mine was a Dell.
My typing problem is different. When typing the cursor moves sometimes, so a word can have the first couple of letters in right place but then the next letters/words will appear somewhere else. It can end up in email address, at the beginning of message, at the end, anywhere. It's not only annoying but time consuming too. I hoped that I might have someone else that it happens to. But not to be.
Thank you.

Re: IT Help, Please
I have seen similar happening in Dell's, i've been through dozens in my job (no exaggeration, they're just not mine). I think its down to the touchpad or the nibble or even both being too sensitive. If you can disable tapping, it should sort out your problem.

Re: IT Help, Please
I thought you said you had a Dell.
Anyway, Tapping is hitting the touchpad and it reacts as if you clicked the mouse left button and a Nibble is the little blue thing next to the G and H keys which is effectively another mouse replacement.

Re: IT Help, Please
I do have a Dell.
I didn't know that that hitting a mousepad was called Tapping but it seems to be disabled.
I don't have a little blue thing sitting anywhere, I'm afraid.
