FREE - Cardiff Science Festival 9-15 July ALL AGES Tours/Workshops/Comedy
Our showcase for science and technology has over fifty events spread across more than a dozen venues across Cardiff. From hands on workshops, live demonstrations, talks, discussion forums, performances, lectures, debates, exhibitions, guided tours and panel discussions, there is something for everybody.
We hope to encourage people to discover the wonder of the world they live in. Our week-long event hopes to enthuse the people of Cardiff through providing experiences that are inspiring and confidence-building.”
Highlights for 2012 include Comedy events such as “Science Showoff”, a science-themed open mic night or the “Bright Club” where researchers become comedians for one night only. Think of it like a kind of a Thinking Person’s Variety Night! “Nature Fail” is a brand new comedy performance about how technology helps the human race defy Mother Nature’s limits.
Family events include a special screening of the brand new Ice Age film, preceded by a talk from a science expert. Science rapper Jon Chase will be rapping in the science marquee at Mermaid Quay and Cardiff’s own Dr Mark Lewney will delight teenage audiences with his “Rock Guitar in 11 Dimensions” show.
Adult events include “I’m a Scientist…Get me out of here” will have five scientists on stage, voted off one by one by the audience until a winner is crowned and the whole festival culminates with non-other than a science fiction themed ceilidh!
Cardiff Science Festival is being organised by a group of volunteers with the aim of providing as many fun and informative events as possible whilst keeping the costs as low as possible.

URGENT MFEST NEWStilly wrote:Morrisons giving away free MFest tickets
thanks to dlam
Just done my weekly shop at Hunslet Morrisons and was given two free tickets to the MFest (normally £49.50 each according to the ticket)
I'm assuming it's because they aren't selling, since the customer services woman couldn't say why they had started giving them away. but whatever the reason, it's a bit of a bargain. No idea if there's a minimum spend, but I only spent £47 and got them.
I assume it's only going to be Leeds Morrisons doing this, and possibly only that store.
We know that thousands of customers were looking forward to the MFEST this weekend. If you were one of them please read on...
It is with our deepest regret that due to the adverse weather conditions leading up to this event, in conjunction with the extreme weather warning issued by the met office for the weekend, we were left with no other decision than to abandon this weekend's MFEST.
This was a joint decision made between the promoter, the production team, health and safety and Harewood House.
We sought advice from a number of agencies including Leeds City Council before making the decision.
The public's health and safety is of paramount concern, therefore it would be irresponsible to continue however disappointed we all are.
Information on ticket refunds will be issued on Monday 9th July.
For further announcements please visit themfest.com or follow us on Twitter or Facebook.

Bastille Day London 2012 - the 14th of July is the French Fête Nationale in London !
French, Londoners, soon it will be time for each one of us to celebrate together the Bastille Day 2012 in London, also known as 14th of July or Fête Nationale - name it as you prefer. Camembert, Saucisson, red wine, Foie gras; this will be a chance for you to enjoy some of the most delicious and famous French specialties, while playing a game of Pétanque or dancing to the beat of an accordion all night. For another fabulous year running, a lot of festivities have been planned in London, and in case you don’t know which one to choose we selected the best ones just for you.
Ricard will transform The Chelsea Physic Gardens into « Jardins de la Joie de Vivre » and will offer us a nostalgic 1920’s moment. French chic and British kitsch will be cheerily combined for one day. Pick up your panama at the entrance and sip quietly some “Perroquet” and “Mojito” cocktails. You will also have the opportunity to play giant garden chess, croquet, do treasure hunts and obviously to take part to the Ricard Petanque tournament. The Ricard Pétanque Garden Party promises us a day full of sport and a delicious gourmet BBQ.
From 11am to 6pm. Free Admission.
If you’d prefer to celebrate the Bastille Day with music, Canada Square Park will be welcoming music lovers from around the world during the City of London Festival for special French gigs of Pop, Folk and Jazz. Santa Macairo Orkestar will start the celebrations at 1.30pm with alternative folk and you will be able then to enjoy L and the KKC Orchestra. It’s set to be a delightful musical afternoon filled with live French music in the heart of the City.
1.30pm - 7pm. Free admission.

Re: Free Days Out - post them here!
Free music on the waterfront weekend
On the Waterfront is back for 2012!
Now in its fourth year the On the Waterfront festival is set to bring the Pier Head to life with not one, but two free music concerts next month.
The event – this year called Music on the Waterfront – takes place on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 July and will be kicked off in orchestral style by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. With popular conductor John Wilson at the helm, the concert will be a night of popular classics and music from the silver screen, including music and songs from the likes of Carousel, Annie Get Your Gun, Funny Girl and The Sound of Music.
The orchestra will be joined by critically acclaimed soloist, Broadway star, Kim Criswell, who will sing songs from the golden age of the Hollywood musicals including There’s No Business Like Show Business and Stormy Weather.
And, as 2012 marks 50 years since The Beatles came together, the symphonic performance will include a celebration of some of the Fab Four’s hits.
The Pier Head party continues on the Saturday as the city welcomes eight stellar music acts – the full line up will be revealed in coming weeks.
Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said: “Liverpool is a city with music running through its veins and so it’s wonderful that in this hugely significant Beatles year, we’re bringing outstanding live music to thousands of people.
“The popularity of the On the Waterfront event has grown year on year, and for many, the festival is one of the highlights of our events calendar.
“When it comes to free, outdoor events, Liverpool excels – and this July will be no exception. From classical to pop, there will be something for everyone, and with the beautiful surroundings of our iconic waterfront, they will be an unmissable couple of evenings.”
Last year’s On the Waterfront events included Spring on the Waterfront in April, Reflection on the Waterfront in July and the Mersey River Festival in September. In total they attracted a massive 250,000 people, bringing in more than £10m to the local economy.

He has scored over 40 films for cinema and television, earning an Ivor Novello nomination for best score. His film work includes Mira Nair’s ‘The Namesake’, as well as ‘A Throw of Dice’ and ‘Yogoto No Yume’, both accompanied by live performances with the London Symphony Orchestra. A committed yogini, she has been inspired by Bhakti and Nada Yoga and is a well-respected teacher who specializes in teaching the lineage of Krishnamacharya. Claire’s creative sequencing and devotion to yoga seep into every class, where you can expect music, laughter, sweat and bhava.
