DH & I found this an interesting one - though at times it did drag - I agree with everyone that is was over long.
I felt it was very much in the form of a play - focussed on the people and the dialogue rather than the action. DiCaprio did a good job really - never off the screen for over 2 hours. The film made me interested to check out reading a few biographies and that has to be a good thing.
I felt very irritated that a number of those in our audience actually laughed when the Mother said:
[spoiler]I would rather have a dead son that a daffodil for a son[/spoiler]
- totally ruined that scene for other viewers.
An interesting film - that should have had a more severe edit to cut it down just a little - the pace was just too slow in many places. BUT the main problem with it - as everyone has mentioned - the aged make-up for Clyde
- that was so poor, it was distracting during lots of key moments and that really was a shame - a film with a budget like that should have done a far better job that any 5 year old with a ball of white plasticine could have done!
6.5/10 from us - ( sadly, 2/10 if you include the terrible make-up on Clyde!)

i just don't understand... I mean it's not like Clint Eastwood is a 'bad' director.
He must've seen how poor the make-up was, how long and drawn out the script was...

I also felt disappointed that they ignored so much of history; that the film should have been edited to reduce the time by at least 20 minutes; and that some of the makeup was so appallingly applied.
Overall I enjoyed the film - 6.5/10 (mostly due to the excellent performance given by DiCaprio)

Went to see a free preview of "J. Edgar"; it is structured as a conventional TV movie of the 1970s with uneven film production values. The make-up artist needs to find another job. Directed by Clint Eastwood the film charts of life and career of J Edgar Hoover through his retelling of key moments to a FBI staffer who is ghost writing his autobiography. Though we will find out at the end in a throwaway line this might not have been the true version of events.
Eastwood seeks to be balanced on key aspects of the Hoover legend. The gay rumours are put down to wanting the (very few or indeed the only person) people he could trust close to him, though his Deputy Guy Coldson the object of his trust thought otherwise. His advances were rejected. And, hence his first instincts, on meeting his soon to be long serving Secretary played by Naomi Watts is to offer marriage. They didn’t, her trust didn’t require it. The claims that he crossed dressed were dealt with in a scene where in grief for his dead mother he puts on one of her dresses and breaks down. Indeed, a lot was put down to Hoover’s relationship with his mother, played by Judi Dench; as it always is, so there are echoes of Oliver Stone’s Nixon, a man who Hoover distrusted for the same character flaws he also carried.
In truth in 140 minutes a hell of a lot of Hoover story has been left out. Why he didn't go after the mafia, the McCarthy era, the Kennedy assassination and the lives he threatened were skirted over. It would have been better as a HBO six part series over 6 to 9 hours. Eastwood had a rare bad day in the office.
