Re: Prometheus
as a movie, this is largely a pile of pap. the story is worthy of a straight to dvd movie, yes, its that poor. There are however about twentyminutes of stunning cgi and landscapes. Whilst I was never convinced the explorers were ever anywhere alien, it looked pretty sumptuous on imax. They were sadly, some of the most stupid explorers I have ever seen, with probably a combined IQ of less than Newt from Aliens (Newt is, like, 8 years old, btw). How dumb can they be...'here kitty kitty' at an alien worm thing.....(cue incessant screaming). Personally I dont b*y into the whole human progenitor theory either which was even dumber, possibly dumber than Creationist theory, but hey, whatever 'you choose to believe' lol. Not half as dumb as the presentation of the face of the Weyland corporation, mind you. Perhaps the Yutani half of the Weyland-Yutani corporation provides the brains and not the looks? Ridley must have forgot that we the audience do have brains. yeah, i used the words dumb and dumber a lot for a reason.
One thing - the aliens seemed quite tame - the robot surgeon lent us the biggest squirms! A standout scene!
And I have to admit that, as bad as this was in parts, and as way too early in time this story occurs (no way we are going to be starfaring this century, we havent even got to Mars yet!) I miss big budget sci fi so I really enjoyed seeing that element again. too much packed into the movie, it felt like 3 movie plots condensed.

Re: Prometheus
I really enjoyed it,i did not go in with high expectations and did not compare with the Alien franchise...just go and see it on the big screen and enjoy the spectacle even if the story is a bit weak.
Re: Prometheus
I'm gonna go along with MrG's take on Prometheus, it's not nearly as bad as some reviews suggest. Thanks to lovely a_person I got to see it on a huge Xtreme screen at Vue last week and actually really enjoyed it, though it could have been written better. I'll be getting the soundtrack and hope they follow this up with a sequel or two...TheyCallMeMrGlass wrote:I saw this at a local Odeon, so no using my Cineworld unlimited card this time. But the film was totally worth the ticket price. So beautifully shot, it has an engaging narrative with some moments of pure brilliance in Ridley Scot's direction. I also loved the thought provoking exploration of the motives, purpose and faith of certain individual characters in the film and their quest for answers. We may or may not get those answers but I was very satisfied with the film's ending and I really hope there will be 1 or 2 sequels for which there is plenty of scope to expand on before bridging the original Alien movies. This is no imitation or repeat of Alien or Aliens, this film has a different purpose and is a great film in its own right whilst it still fits perfectly well into Alien-lore. The cinematography almost steals the show though, it is breathtaking right from the start. The soundtrack is also great with a surprising variation of more playful themes than the usual darker shrills we expect from and Alien film.
I was looking forward to this for a long time. I never expected it be a great masterpiece and it isnt, it does fall short off that mark (mainly because of a lack of character development with all but 2 of the main stars) but its great sci-fi and I am not disappointed, its what I expected from a Ridley Scott film. It even had more action than I expected as I though it would be more of a slow burn moody piece. I look forward to seeing this on its Blu Ray release as there much to absorb in this film, and perhaps there may even be a longer cut.
I give Prometheus 8.5/10
in comparison:
Alien - 9/10
Aliens - 9.8/10
Alien 3 - 6.5/10
Alien Resurrection - 6.5/10
Why on earth cant they get aging make up right, if this was made in the 70s I would have accepted it but not today. And why the hell did they need to cast a young actor, Pearce, as an old man, anyway? There are plenty of very good old actors around who would be honored to be in a Ridley Scott film. Christopher Plummer or even Christopher Lee are still game.
Love the ending. Its clear to me that the events at the end is on a different planet to the beginning of Alien. Its not the same ship. BUT there are other planets with this ship and with Elizabeth on a new found purpose to seek out those planets and ships to either get answers or destroy them is a great foundation to build sequels on and it DOES goes someway to explain or narrow the speculation of the the ship and space Jockey in Alien. So Weyland Corp is seeking out the Aliens for advancement in weaponry and technology but Elizabeth by then may have seeked them all out and destroyed them. A very long journey for sequels to be made from :) Though I have to admit, they need to keep the stories fresh and unrepetetive which might be hard, especially with Elizabeth having no human crew and just an android head...
Re: Prometheus
I enjoyed it although it wasn't anywhere near as good as Blade Runner, for instance, and a lot of the enjoyment was how fantastic the 3D at BFI Imax was. I'm a bit of a 3D virgin really and I'm going back on Sunday with my husband to show him how fantastic 3D can be.

Re: Prometheus
Apparently this was the Secret Cinema screening last night in London.
Heard the warehouse and surroundings were pretty good, made to look like an alien space craft and all staff were in character.
The movie... well lets just say the feedback was not good.

Re: Prometheus
Looks like this film has been overhyped. Might still check it out though.
Re: Prometheus
I saw this at Nu Metro Cinema 11. What? Nobody recognize the venue?
Ok, this is actually one of the flagship theaters in South Africa. So flagship in fact that they couldn't even get the sound right. The whole movie echoed...violently...completely drowning out the dialogue. I'll definitely need to rewatch this, probably with subtitles.
Anyway, if you loved the Alien movies and you're hoping this is similar in style, expect to be radically disappointed. The first 25 minutes of ALIEN is lengthened to about 60 minutes in this one. And then just when it starts getting exciting, it ends.
Also,
this ISN'T an obvious prequel to ALIEN - it's more of a prequel to a set of sequels, one of which might be a direct prequel to ALIEN. All I can say is I hope history repeats itself and James Cameron helms the sequel. Probably no chance of that happening but hey, I can dream right?
Re: Prometheus
I finally had a chance to watch this movie. I loved it, I thought that if you switch off, you will enjoy it... I thought that at times it was quite slow and dragged out.
I didn't watch the film in 3D, so I can't comment on that
I would give it a 7/10

A horse walks into a bar and the bartender asks, "Why the long face?"
A pony walks into the bar and whispers, "I'll have a beer, please." The barkeeper asks, "Why are you whispering?".
"I'm a little hoarse."

Re: Prometheus
I FINALLY got to see this at an American multiplex, which was very exciting indeed. No, it's not as bad as some of the reviews suggest, it just doesn't live up to the hype. Also, the 3D is rubbish.

6/10 - a relatively fair assessment?
