I cannot believe Empire only gave this film 2 stars.

Goes to show what do critics know. You just have to see a film regardless of what the critics say.

The Sparrow wrote:I loved Francois Cluzet in Little White Lies too. Can't say I see too much resemblance to Dustin Hoffman though.
We saw Dustin Hoffman at the Old Vic a couple of few days ago (he was in the audience not on the stage) and he does not look like Francois Cluzet (anymore).

Wow, that was one full screening. Arrived a full 45 minutes early with my friend, and people were already streaming in! Mostly the blue rinse brigade, but we also saw pcrock and a few friends of PXC's.

Subtitles can make you dumb sometimes because you don't listen to what they are really saying. I found out tonight that when Driss calls a guy Justin Bieber, in the original it's a French singer's name, and when he compares the guy next to him to George Bush and Nixon, in reality he talks about a French politician. They obviously decided to make the translation more international.

9/10 again

As I struggle to combat my glut of reviews-to-write, I'm at least managing to get them done prior to release.

Here's mine for this charming comedy... the first French film I've enjoyed in ages.

102 Different free films seen in 2010 plus 2 repeat viewings and a few tv show screenings... not too shabby. Thanks to everyone for their contributions here.

I have seen this ages ago, but isn't the woman who raised Driss is aunty rather than his mother?

I am also intrigued by "does raise the question as to why the character was altered to what could be perceived as a more acceptable minority"; is this coming from the production notes or your take on it? Why does that mean? In what sense would this be more "acceptable"?
Omar has worked with the directors three times before embarking for Intouchables, and they have contacted him regarding Driss character before they'd started writing the script. They wrote Driss for Omar.

I think there is a point than non French are missing, Algerian ascendancy or Senegalese ascendancy is a tiny point of detail, what was important to portray here imo was that Driss was "un gamin des banlieues", a kid from the burbs.

I shall rewatch it on release as everybody seemed t have enjoyed here way more than I did originally!
