Re: Public Enemies
How disappointing! I really expected more from this. I thought it would be one of my fave films for this year considering it had Bale and Depp (I usually love their films), 1930s Chicago! It all sounded great but I was getting quite bored by the end.
I felt it went on for too long and I really couldn't care less by the end. I also found it difficult to follow at times and was trying to keep up with all other gangsters, I think it may have been more interesting if they had spent a bit more time interweaving those stories in too (like Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd), although not sure how they could have done that as it was already too long! It wasn't all bad and Depp did have some great one liners though. 6.5/10 for me.
I was also at Greenwich and I thought it was pretty full from where I was sitting (near the back). I would have said close to 90-95% or so but there were the odd seats here and there.
Another thing I've noticed with recent screenings (in the last few months) is that more young people (aged around 15-19) are attending previews. I wonder if SFF are putting on extra tix for young people via youth clubs or if someone is getting them tickets. Maybe they are effectively using the codes for themselves (might even be members here!) but I was starting to think it was more of an organised thing as it is not two or three young people coming together - it is sometimes nine or ten, so they are managing to come as a fairly large group of friends which would require at least 4 or 5 pairs of tix. I wouldn't have a problem with it and I'm glad they can get involved but they sometimes need to be a bit more self aware. Going up and down the stairs to have a quick chat to each other is disruptive to others! I wasn't too bothered by them today but could see how others were. And luckily they weren't as rude/ loud as the group Beate had to endure at WIQ.

Re: Public Enemies
Have to say, I rather disliked this film as well. It seemed to me to take itself far too seriously. Like when depp went into the police station and saw all the info on him - that was funny! But the music and atmosphere was all serious. The only point I chuckled was the "look to your left. Now look to your right." I know it is supposed to be a gangster movie but a more light hearted approach I think would have made it an easier watch. It was far too long, although on a hot day like today I enjoyed every minute of the coolness in the cinema. 5/10 I think.

The existing SSF system is so crap. I think if you can print the same print out several times. you will be able to get in without problem!!!opas wrote: Another thing I've noticed with recent screenings (in the last few months) is that more young people (aged around 15-19) are attending previews. I wont be surprised if some of them are members here and we will see them even more in the future screening!!! All we can do is to learn how to endure watching film with many ppl talking

Re: Public Enemies
I'm not sure what the cinemas do with the print outs but I was thinking they collect them and send them to SFF (or at least go through them to report some data back to SFF) - so if someone wanted to print multiple copies of their ticket they could be risking their SFF account. But that is probably an idealised version of what could happen.
Screenings are definitely more full than a year ago. Previously you could sit in a screen with no more than 20 others and it was unusual to have a screening that was more than 50-60% full. 90%+ full screenings are becoming more common.

Oh there are ways round this - you don't have to print off the same name 5 times if you get me!opas wrote:I'm not sure what the cinemas do with the print outs but I was thinking they collect them and send them to SFF (or at least go through them to report some data back to SFF) - so if someone wanted to print multiple copies of their ticket they could be risking their SFF account. Re: Public Enemies
Saw Public Enemies at Vue York last night, which was about 80% full. For me i would have liked to have seen a deeper relationship between John Dillinger and Billie, so you felt it when they were separated more, and also with Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd...it was gust given that they were also gangsters. I hate to day it but i didn't feel that there was a strong enough story. I hated some of the camera work where it flashed about....also iffy camera work in the wooden cabin too...far too many close ups and blurry at times. Made me feel i could have done sitting back at least an extra 10 rows.
The music was good, but some of the gun shots hurt my ears...mind you we did have a humming speaker so maybe that was sound quality.
Really sad to find fault as i love cinemas as much as everyone, and Johnny Depp is always a treat.
Sadly only a 6/10 for me

Good news everyone I've invented a device that makes you read this in your head in my voice!

Re: Public Enemies
I was at Braehead and it was pretty much full.
I found the film overly earnest, overly long and just downright poor story-wise in parts. The Dillinger/Billie relationship was so quickly & poorly done it wasn't believable why he was bothered about her.
On the plus side at least Michael Mann makes the gunshots sound like they're coming from the actual gun (a la Heat), mst directors don't bother and all the gunshots sound the same.
Overall, I'll give it 3/5

Re: Public Enemies
Agree with the last two comments about the film. Thought it would be more intricate and interesting.
