Can anyone help please? I have a netbook that I use for my emails and last night when I logged on the whole screen was suddenly taken up by DR GUARD who informed me I had a trojan virus and I needed to activate their software - at a price - to get rid of it.

I cannot move it off my screen and cannot get access any other part of my netbook to get rid of it. Has this ever happened to anyone else and what is the solution?

We had a similar problem last week with a trojan called "SecurityTool", and not being too au fait with computers it was very frustrating. The message you are receiving is attempting to scare you into purchasing something you do not need to b*y. I was recommended to download the following:

This is a free download. When you download and run it, it should remove the trojan from your computer.

Since we did this, our computer is now virus free.

It seems Dr Guard is the virus as it uninstalls antivirus and antispyware programs to prevent its own deletion. The cure is found on the link below.

As a general rule of thumb you should never, under any circumstance, respond to a website alert informing you that your pc is infected by clicking on either the OK or Cancel buttons. Both are guaranteed to infect your clean pc!!
Instead bring up the task manager by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del and close your browser from there. Works every time and it bypasses the virus install routine which requires you to press a button.
I recommend Avast antivirus to stop further infections and it has little, if any, impact on performance. Also its free.

will any of this work though if biggins can't access anything on the computer?

He can reboot in safe mode; press F8 during initial boot up - if you see the windows startup screen, you missed it and will have to reboot again.
Safe mode is a vastly cut down version of windows which will not load unnecessary drivers or programs during startup. Its a diagnostic mode which is the ideal place to run an AV program, even when you don't know if you're infected.

Just home and got my notebook here in front of me whilst on my main computer reading your instructions.

Managed to get rid of the Dr Guard taking up the whole screen and got task master up but then it came up "task master disabled by administrator"- so that didn't work. Meanwhile things got worse as up popped two shortcuts to Porn sites which I think and hope I have deleted. Got into Add/remove on my control panel but Dr Guard would not be deleted.

Now trying to download the free Anti virus mentioned by Tufty but this is going to take another 30 mins and warning signs are coming up all the time both by Dr Guard and windows security center. Will let you know how I get on with this in the next half hour.

Beware of this Dr Guard as it is very clever. Tried downloading the antispyware but it attacked it and stopped the installation of the spyware. Task manager was disabled by it also so nothing seemed to help.

My stepson was on the phone and told him about it so he came up but it was too late -nothing left now on my little computer!!! Dead!!!
Rebooted but only lights up to a blank screen.

I have a disc to reinstall Windows but I am not able to do this as I don't have an external drive for the disc. But my stepson has taken it as someone he works with will be able to start it up again for me and then I will have to put all my contacts, favourites, etc back on again. Going to get a good antivirus on it as well!!!

Thank you to everyone who gave me all the advice and the websites to look on. Hope it doesn't ever happen again - so frustrating and time consuming!!!

Its a real shame that your pc is dead. Did you manage to boot into safe mode at all?

Rebooted it twice but it only would come up with my screensaver and nothing else. We tried everything we could think of but nothing would work or move. My stepson has it to take to a IT Techie pal of his to hopefully nurse it back to health.
At least it got rid of DR GUARD!! Don't know how I got this.
