Re: Beginners
I am cancelling a corporate BBQ for this so it better be good. Mind you, if it is anything like the BBQ tonight, it will be a blessing. I like Melanie Laurent, she was in Inglorious Basterds and The Concert.

Re: Beginners
Ooh, just looked on Ritzy's website... the film will be "followed by a Q&A with Director Mike Mills and lead actress Mélanie Laurent!!" Nice.

Re: Beginners
What is this - no one else back yet? Are you all still at the Q&A? I couldn't face it, the film felt two weeks long and I just wanted to get out and get some food.
The Ritzy was rammed - not sure there were empty seats left. And I got seriously annoyed by all the latecomers creating maximum interruption - the bloody film was late starting, how can you be later than that even? And the last row was reserved for whoever - I really LOVE it when they then come in when the film has started and discuss which seats to take. Just shut up, you stupid idiots.
The film - to be honest, I didn't care much for any of the characters, the story felt fragmented and moved backwards and forwards in time like a yoyo.
The dog was nice. Otherwise, this was boring.
6/10

Re: Beginners
I quite enjoyed this. The perfromances were pretty fantastic even if the story wasn't the most finely constructed piece in the world. Melanie Laurent is the cutest and sexiest woman I've seen on-screen in along time. It did feel like a lengthy film but I think a lot of that had to do with the jumping back and forth between past and present. It's definitely an art-house kind of flick and there were some visuals that I'd need another viewing or two to unravel the meaning of. I liked the mix of comedy in what is otherwise a pretty somber story. I could definitely relate to a lot of the themes in this film, which I'm sure influenced how I saw it.
I stayed for the Q&A and kicked myself for not finding out it was happening prior to my arrival there, as I didn't have my DSLR with me. I hopped into the vacant front row, as loads of people left during the credits. I thought it was a pretty good session and Melanie Laurent seems a lot of fun. She asked me to unscrew the cap of her bottled water as she couldn't manage it. How manly did I feel? Not that I'm totally smitten or anything...
I'd give the film 7.5/10 and Miss Laurent a 10!
