The Sapphires
I remember seeing the trailer for this a good while ago, probably because of Chris O'Dowd. I'm always interested in Australian cinema (side effect of a uni module!) but this smells a little too whitepeoplesolvedracism.

Re: The Sapphires
has had very good reviews & standing ovation at cannes film festival.
based on true story & whilst it does look kinda cheesy, chris o'dowd has yet to be disappointing, even in some very bad movies.
looking forward to seeing. clashes with argo, but will see ahead of that.

Re: The Sapphires
Didn't see a single FMUKer at WIQ tonight as they were all probably at Argo and I ain't waitin' in no bar to be told which screen it is so we found out another way and stood our ground at screen 1.
This was a nice, funny little film about 4 plucky girls who wanted to be famous even though it wasn't very likely, with them being Aborigine girls in 60s Australia. And quite frankly, I have never heard of them before so not sure how much they succeeded. The performances were all great (Chris O'Dowd is outstanding) but despite of giving us Kay's story and having them being shot at in Vietnam, there wasn't all that much drama going on and it was a feel-good flick with a lot of good songs. Nothing less, nothing more.
7.5/10

Re: The Sapphires
That's pretty much what i thought Beate and i was expecting to see a well kent name up there at the end assuming that Julie at least had made it big. The interplay between the sisters was all very believable. Liked the way they all did a 'show' at the beginning but this was one with style! Not the type we did when we were wee in front of whatever adults would sit and watch, usually our stage was the living room rug.
There was more drama at the beginning in Fountian park with the film starting 10 minutes early then stopping after a few minutes then the lights going down again then up then the film started then the lights dimmed.......confusionarama
7/10 from me

Re: The Sapphires
I really enjoyed this. I'm a sucker for soul music anyway and there's a great choice of tunes which are really well performed.
The issues of race and Vietnam certainly take a backseat to the feel good element of the story, but there's definitely one scene in the middle which does pack quite a dramatic punch.
On the whole though its kinda Commitments meets Good Morning Vietnam and it's funny and engaging and Chris O'Dowd especially is on great form.
I know this clashed with Argo for some people, but it's definitely worth seeking out and watching.

Lovely heart warming film and if you liked "The Help" you will no doubt enjoy this. 7/10
Good turn out from most of the Manchester FMUKers (r33ceh is on his holidays) and KEY103 (local radio station) were outside interviewing people (my friends from work) but we made a quick exit even though it was said by a certain FMUKer that I'm the gobby one

Re: The Sapphires
Saw this in a 70% full Braehead tonight though staff did say they expected it to be full. I presume the others went to Argo.
An entertaining film which touched on many issues, particularly the problems for the Aborigines even in the 1960s. It did also touch on the American situation re black Americans, even in the Vietnam war.
Having said all that, the REAL story was that of 3 sisters and a cousin's attempt to be a singing group (in real life it was 2 sisters and 2 cousins). I was hooked in the first 5 minutes with the first song by the girls as children! Obviously their experiences are followed as they try to achieve a level of fame and, of course, love "is in the air".
Chris O'Dowd is
fantastic in the role of the drunk who appoints himself as the manager of the girls' group. Best acting I 've seen from him!
Delighted to have seen this for free but would not have been unhappy to have pa*d!
Marks 8.5/10
ps I was interviewed for Radio Clyde re my opinion of the film. The poor womand had approached a lot of folk inside the screening before the film started but almost everyone refused. I felt sorry for her so . . . went for it! I think it is the least we can do particularly as we are seeing the films for free!
