Might as well copy over my thoughts from the London Film Festival thread where this played as the surprise film.
So tonight's surprise film turned out to be Silver Linings Playbook. Thought it was quite good and probably has Bradley Cooper's best performance so far as the central character that suffers from mental illness. It's a little disjointed as a film (a feeling I had when I saw the trailer a couple of weeks ago). The first 90 mins feels like a more serious (though often funny) drama about mental illness with a swerve into a final half hour with an almost romantic comedy feel before a feelgood rousing finale, it's mental illness plot almost forgotten. But it was very enjoyable, and as well as a great Bradley Cooper performance there are also strong turns from Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Animal Kingdom's Jacki Weaver. Even Rush Hour's Chris Tucker is very good (and nowhere near annoying as he usually is).
The film was followed by an entertaining Q&A with Cooper and director David O Russell. Particularly the bit where Russell practically said an audience member's question was rubbish (in fairness the question was why they had changed the title from the book's 'The Silver Linings Playbook' to just 'Silver Linings Playbook'). Another of the film's actors (Anupam Kher who plays Cooper's therapist) was also in the audience.
I was also sat next to Anna Friel and Rhys Ifans, so that was exciting.

Too many disruptive twats turned up at Shepherd's Bush tonight, it seems it was badly overbooked as well, so the first 20 minutes we had people looking for non-existent seats in the dark, being asked to leave and arguing with cinema staff inside the screen while the film is on... Then the chatting, swapping seats midway through the film (WTF?), checking mobile phones, etc. Unbelievable. I liked the film quite a lot, but will have to watch again at some point to enjoy fully.

Well I thoroughly enjoyed it. Even sitting near the front at Islington didn't ruin it. Great performances all round and as an American Football fan (not the Eagles), loved that whole side of the story too.

Perhaps too broad for its own good at the end, but a ride I was happy to take. Deeper and more emotionally honest than others of the same ilk, but willing to please the crowds too. Exceptional performances all round, and well paced for a 2 hour film. Loved it.

I know, it seemed as if there were more mentally unstable people at the screening then on the screen and the seats were vibrating (2nd row). I was felling sea sick with all the people coming and going, the screen being so near and the weird seats.
The film definitely had funny moments and great acting but I felt a little conscious laughing at the clinically diagnosed disturbed even if the undiagnosed seemed crazier at times. 7/10

I thought this was uneven and too long. The performances were all great but I don't understand why he would have got a restraining order, and what was this rubbish with the Eagles and a dancing competition all the time? It was too shouty and hectic in parts and I don't think it really gives you a picture of mental illness. Was it supposed to be a drama or a rom-com? Also, what does the title mean? I get the silver linings but what about the playbook? I like Jennifer Lawrence but felt she was too young for such a role.

Also, to the two women who came into the balcony area for seats at 8.05pm - WTF? Otherwise I strangely have no complaints about tonight's audience other than the fact that while some people arrive earlier and earlier for the balcony seats, some leave it to the last blinking minute.

6.5/10

Nice surprise of a film! Bradley Cooper gives a great performance as someone trying to cope with mental illness. There is excellent chemistry between him and Jennifer Lawrence, playing each other off very well. Robert de Niro is also very good as his bookie father with an OCD. It's got moments of quirky humour as well. Worth watching.
