Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters

#1 Post by canadian_turtle » Thu Feb 07, 2013 9:12 pm

Got to see Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters tonight, which I really enjoyed. It was of course stupid, ridiculous and over the top, but it was also (surprisingly so) a lot of fun to watch.

Jeremy Renner is always a pleasure to see on the screen and while I haven't seen Gemma Arterton in much (except for Song for Marion recently) I thought she was good in the role too. Gotta say though that the character of Edward kind of steals the show, and I thought Ben was rather adorable too ;)

The 3D was proper good I found with items really coming out of the screen at the audience. A lot of special effects were actually pretty good (though again, very over the top – there was definitely too much gore for my taste, but then that was to be expected from a film about witch hunters). Also, I really liked the music.

One criticism: The film is VERY dark. I don't think it's because of the 3D as I watched it briefly without glasses and it seemed equally dark, but I guess it's just to fit the genre. It's a shame because the make-up of the witches is really rather awesome but a lot of it gets lost because it's all very dark.

Still, 7.5/10

We were shown a teaser for G.I. Joe: Retaliation before which although not normally my thing again had great use of 3D. And to tie in with the theme they gave us G.I. Joe tshirts and pins too, which is always a bonus (that, and the free bar!).

Intelligent it is not, but it is certainly entertaining. A big dumb action flick that is quite a fun ride with some silly dialogue, excellent soundtrack, great special effects and eye-popping use of 3D. 6.5/10.

Were we watching the same film?! Both my friend and I found it to be dire. What a pointless film to have made... 2/10

I'm another one that really didn't like it. I hvae no idea what market they are aiming at. I found it to have horrific violence especially against Gretel. The American Accents and swearing really jarred, and didn't sit right for me. It was far too dark even without the glasses on!

I love stuff like this, I really enjoyed Snow White and the Huntsman, but this just didn't cut it for me - one long massive fight with a few lines of dialogue inbetween. Jeremy Renner should be ashamed.

The only thing that entertained me was the name Edward which was ironic! The free beer and the length of the film 4/10
