The Call

#1 Post by Beate » Tue Sep 10, 2013 9:29 pm

Well, that was... intense. Quite violent as well.

It started promising in the 911 call centre but then it descended into "seen it all before" territory where people always make the same stupid mistakes when faced with a psychopathic killer, like calling the police when he can still see them or going alone into the woods to find him. I mean that was so extra-stupid that I have no words for it. And if he was so easy to find, why did the cops not find him sooner?

And that ending - do not talk to me about that ending. It made no sense whatsoever. I can't really talk about it without spoilering but did anyone put their brain into gear for one second there? I don't think so.

Some ill-mannered people in the audience as well tonight. One constantly checking their phone, one constantly talking, and some people thinking they can push into the queue we have started just because they were there earlier. So? You didn't stand up for half an hour though, you sat your arse on a chair oblivious to us, then don't come running afterwards and elbow ZoeBanfield out the way! Weasels. Heard a woman loudly complaining to her friend afterwards that she was shushed everytime she talked. "You know what I mean? Shushing ME?" I just had to laugh. Them's the rules, babes - you talk, you get shushed.

6/10

Back from Glasgow Cineworld where I think there were lots of new faces in the audience. Sat with Ploggit and McG as well as friend.

The Call was interesting enough but I was glad it was only 94 minutes long. Any more and it would had dragged for me. The actor playing Michael was scary and pretty psycho. Though I thought the room she ran into would have something more sinister but really didn't. And why did Berry in the last scene had only her bra and trousers on?? 5/10

halle berry, for all her undoubted talent, does make some odd choices.

Here she looks like Whitney Houston....not good looking whitney, but rather drug-addled-soon-to-be-dead whitney.

this would have been a straight to dvd release without halle berry & barely merits a cinema release with her, (my mum loved it...grrr)

3/10 bonus point for whatsisname outta Soprano's

Gosh, yes, I forgot to say - who gives Halle Berry those dreadful hairdos?

Well this was much more enjoyable than I expected it to be and I think a lot of that was due to Halle Berry.

Her performance in this reminded me of Liam Neeson's in 'Taken', in the sense it was just so much more layered & complex than a movie of this type deserved and consequently ended up elevating it to a level, quality wise, that it was never intended to reach.

That said, I thought the rest of the cast were at the very least solid, Abigail Breslin wasn't the stereotypical irritating teen you tend to encounter in this genre (I'm still getting over the shock of finding out a short while ago that she played Olive in 'Little Miss Sunshine' 8O ) and Michael Eklund was effective as the cold, creepy & charisma free serial killer.

Admittedly it let itself down in the final twenty minutes or so as a certain character's decision making skills dropped down a few notches but despite that I still found this to be a tense & relatively fast paced thriller that's worthy of an 8/10 from me o/ ...

I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would...until the last 15 minutes that is.
The initial 911 calls and the ensuing action undertaken
with the victim in the boot of the car
made it all the more intense and exciting....and then the story went all Hollywood, with some stupid & unnecessarily irritating decisions being made, which ruined the overall film for me.
Before the last 15 minutes 8/10 after 5/10. Overall 6/10.

I have to say I really enjoyed this film! I thought the tension built up very well although I did think it lost a bit with the last 15 minutes. For most of the film I was on the edge of my seat and the Glasgow audience also seemed gripped by the story as no one moved or went to the toilet. I thought Halle Berry was excellent playing the 911 call handler although I agree her hairstyle left a little to be desired!
From the earlier reviews, it looks as though this film is going to split FMUKers . . . . you either love it or hate it! I loved it! o/
I would have happily pa*d to see The Call and would have been disappointed if I'd missed it.

I didn't hate it, but it certainly wasn't a good film. It was interesting seeing how the 911 system worked, and someone somewhere had done some homework as to how it's all put together. Halle Berry was really struggling valiantly against a godawful script and ridiculous plot turns (and a stupid hairdo), and just about pulled it off. Crap serial killer villain though - really boring!

But at least it was short and never got boring.
