District 9

#1 Post by andrews » Sun Jul 12, 2009 4:24 pm

Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens' welfare - they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens' awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable - he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

Really looking forward to District 9.

I believe it's adapted from Neill Blomkamp's short film Alive in Joburg, when I first saw this it blew me away.
It's worth checking out!

I saw the trailer for the first time when I was at Inglourious Basterds on Monday night. It looked good - I thought 'Transformers meets Alien' when I saw it. I hope there will be some free screenings of this.

Doubt there'll be codes out for it but it's a good film.

Rather odd, about 30 minutes in the documentary style slowly stops and it becomes more a standard fictional film, but by god it's tense and has some nasty moments for the lead character, fingernail moments, eughy.

Really good, everyone should catch it whenever it's released.

That's the first bad review I've seen of this. Up until now, I've heard nothing but good things. It isn't my usual sort of thing, but all the good feedback (from the American release) has got me quite excited for it.

I also saw it at Movie-con last week. I can understand all the hype around it, but to be honest i wasnt 100% won over. I found the cloverfield shaky-camera work style sickening. I suffer from motion sickness so its not the greatest film for me. I liked the concept and the first part was quite good but it descended into something quite strange after. I think its getting great reviews for the fact that it is quite different. But i dont know if different always means good...
