Bring Back The 80s/90s Action Flicks!

#1 Post by IndyJ » Tue Sep 01, 2009 9:16 am

Everyone know what I mean!

Then, action was action. Although the acting standards were lower in some of these films- at least you were promised some action!

With the likes of Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Lundgren, Willis, JCVD and a load of others- there was no need to wait months for the next action flick to come out in the cinema.

I went to see GI Joe today, IndyJ. That certainly had plenty of action in it! The storyline was very contrived and, to be honest, wholly unbelievable. Well it was fantasy. Christopher Eccleston's Scottish accent was even worse than Simon Pegg's in Star Trek. LOL.

There were some fine actors in the film - Channing Tatum, Dennis Quaid, Ray Park, Marlon Wayans, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sienna Miller, Jonathan Pryce and a small cameo part by Brendan Fraser. Some sound performances.
The action sequences were great, including a fabulous car chase around Paris. Add to that some fine ninja fights, underwater fights, and you've got an action packed film.

I was amazed that, although this has a 12A certificate, there were families there with children as young as three or four.

Yeah, I know some great action films come out ever now and again but not like they used to.

Back then, every week or two there would be a new 'kick-ass' film out there. The type where a one man army would destroy everyone else!

I agree with IndyJ, they just dont make them the same these days. i've just finished watching the die hard trilogy for like, the hundredth time. They honestly do get better with age! It never fails to shock me though how Willis is still standing at the end.

Fair enough, action films these days have better graphis, cgi's and all that but for me, that is what i miss most about 80's/90's action films, that eliment of 'cheesiness' and how far fetched they always were.

Recently, "12 Rounds" with John Cena was a hark back to the glory days of badly plotted action movies - although that might have had something to do with Renny Harlin being director.

Worth a watch as I think it's similar to what you crave!

I've just seen the trailer for the new bruce willis film- Surogettes. Its looks quite good- but its not the same sort of action as die hard.

But I think The Expendables will be like A 80/90S FLICK.
