@kaybeelon - I am sure some people still do backpacking and living in hostels these days, and do odd jobs to supplement the costs while they travel.

I agree with you ejwrank. I am working now and I don't have that kind of "fun money" - gosh some students don't realise how well off they are. ;) It is a good job, I found out about FMUK, before that I used to see about one or two films a year as a treat!

I was never well off as a student and don't think many are. I do wish I was still a student without a care in the world i.e not working 9-5 every day.

We did 9-5 when I was a student and 11-9 one day a week plus we had to go in over our holidays to cover the clinics, I'm obviously a lot older than you Tilly  . Bringing back memories of my Honda Melody which I had for 5 years as a student and did over 40 000 miles on it as it was much cheaper and quicker than the bus and had to strap a skeleton leg around me on anatomy days which was rubbish when it was raining, knee over my shoulder and tied the foot and the hip together strapped around my waist. I was lucky as lots just had bikes.

thing is, you cant hate or look down on richer students if you are living with them, that'll make living with them a nightmare for you. i did initially when i was younger, which is why i didnt go to uni. You then learn to see them as amusements at first, and then as equals but flawed in terms of how they spend, and then finally, well you see them as people simply on a different path to you. The latter view is the best one, I think, becos being a hateful or disdainful soul isnt really healthy in the long run, it will change the way you see the world into something bad.

or you could just pick a proper common university. :) rock on Teesside Uni.

medicine is pretty good if you are interested really. You dont really have to 'work' during clinicals, just think and observe, question and prepare by reading up. It does seem like a chore though if you've come in from school and its your first time you've done 9-5 hours before.

Wow only 9 hours, mine was nearly 25 years ago so that's how it was in the olden days ha ha.

How has this evolved from job help into debates about rich students?
