HMV - A WARNING!

#1 Post by Spanner » Sun Aug 30, 2009 9:11 am

I'm not sure if this is a scam yet or not but...

Today i received an email from purehmv thanking me for applying to join. (purehmv is a sorta rewards/loyalty scheme run by hmv). I have ordered goods from hmv.com previously and in the email they had my email address and my card number and asked me to validate my account by clicking a link and entering my 3 digit security number. the fact that I'd never applied to join purehmv and that they were asking for that info seemed a tad suspicious to me and when i clicked on the reply button the address came up as....

support-bucbm4ybg6mpq6axt0rmxcwyac6uej@email.hmv.com

well dodgy imo. Anyway I have reported this to the purehmv address as quoted on the hmv website and will let you know if i get and reply. it may well be legit if so it's a funny way of going about business.

be careful out there people!

hmmmm well why would they want the 3 digit security number of the back of my card then? and why say thanks for joining when i never joined and why have all those dodgy numbers in the reply address.... i got an autoreply from hmv but nothing else yet. maybe i'm being overly suspicious but you can never be too alert for stranger danger.

Are you talking about the 3 digit code from your banker's card, Spanner? If this is the case, then this is most definitely a scam. Any legitimate compnay/bank etc would never ask for that by e-mail or over the phone.

That e-mail you received was not from HMV then. I'm so glad you have mentioned it on here - someone may be duped into giving their 3 digit number. It might be an idea to phone them to speak to a person, rather than an automated response.

I agree, especially as these people have your card number. If it is from HMV it would be a very strange way of doing business, if not, you need to know quickly in case you need to report it to your card company.

No company would randomly ask you and sort of card details like that, especially just your 3 digit number on the back of your card.

You get any reply from hmv?
