Mr G, what are these 3D -> 2D glasses? How do I get a pair?Celini wrote:How boring was that!!!!
They only thing that entertained me tonight was my pair of 3D ->2D glasses!
Thanks for the idea MrG
And i saw (very) briefly ejwrank and David at the bus stop; they did not seem convinced either
6/10 for me, I gave it an extra 0.5 because it was NOT in 3D for me

Castleford was full and people were turned away.
So how many people spotted the blink and you'll miss it cameo of Stan Lee?
He's the guy in the audience at the medal ceremony who said "I thought he was taller".
Indeed I spotted Stan's cameo.
Oh forgot to add in my earlier post that I thought the effect of slimming/shortening Chris Evans was done flawlessly.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger
I got to the cinema at 6:20 and it was already oversubscribed and they were directing people over to the box office to choose another film to see for free. Except I'd seen everything they had on offer so I ended up choosing Harry Potter in 2D. I should have asked for a voucher for another day but I wasn't quite thinking straight and I had just walked the 2.5miles to get there so didn't really want to turn back without seeing something.
I'm not that fussed about missing yet another superhero film, there seems to be so many lately, but I would have liked to have seen something new.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger
Sky are normally the best company for distributing tickets and never overallocate so it's quite surprising to hear that so many people were turned away.
Maybe feedback has shown that the screenings are not 100% full so this is to ensure there are no empty seats?

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger
My review:
I left the house at 5:20 aiming to get to Enfield cinema at 5:45. Got stuck in heavy but moving (albeit slowly) traffic jams and didn’t make it to the cinema until 6pm. As I quickly walked in the lobby was full of people, I thought I was out of luck but as I waded through I saw they were in groups and scattered beyond the ticket checking section. I then saw the groups forming a queue and jumped in and luckily got about 20th in line as the rest of the groups formed an extra 90 person queue behind me. We were let in at 6:15 by a very helpful and polite Sky Lady who seemed to answer everyones questions and take the time to run it smoothly.
We were seated and we were in the biggest screen i'd been in at Enfield and there were only like 5 seats free at the front (from what i could see), as usual, the film didn’t start ontime as they had to let in the stragglers.. I was used to this and was not faulting Sky for this as it happens with every organisation. The film finally started and I actually really liked it. Im flip flopping from Good to Great at the moment as I had some problems with it.
Music. The music on its own was fine. Big, orchestral and fitting the film. However it got really annoying as whenever Cap does something heroic or showing his power, they played the same trumpet song every time and it got very grating and felt very hammered in and lazy
Bucky’s Death. His death scene was great and it felt like its just the thing that’s needed to explore Steve’s character further. But to be honest, they don’t. They show him attempt to get drunk which shows off the power of the serum instead of going into his emotions. Bucky was always there for Steven. When Steven was weaker than Bucky, Bucky pulled him out of trouble. First chance the tables are turned in a fight, Steve lets Bucky down and cant save him. This should’ve had a big impact on him but its pretty much forgotten.
Red Skulls death. While his actual death scene was f**king awesome (I mean, come on, his corpse gets teleported to f**king Asgard. How awesome was that!). It just happened too suddenly. Cap damages the machine Odin’s Cosmic Cube is fused too, and that gets him to touch it and hold it while in the middle of a fight. This seemed delightfully stupid on Red Skull’s part, and also had Cap not do a thing to defeat him. It was by accident and he had no clue what was going on.
Odins Cosmic cube was a bit of a waste. Its power was used pretty well I guess, but I just felt that having the power of the Gods could’ve been used for far more dramatic purposes. Perhaps have Red Skull absorb its power. The power of Odin, which would’ve given him a lot more motive to say he’s god and put a lot more fear into Hydra to force them to follow him. Also it would’ve been awesome for him to be frozen with Cap and team up with Loki, and actual God, in the Avengers. The awesomness of their scenes together would’ve been awesome, instead we got a Nazi version of Xerxes from 300
Also, they could’ve given a much better explanation about how he went into hibernation. I mean, he crashes a plane and suddenly that’s enough to put him into stasis?
That said, I really liked the character development that Steve had in the film besides dealing with loss. The serum makes him into the equivalent of an army yet before and after this process he is a laughing stock and an embarrassment to the army. He is used as a propaganda tool as opposed to a fighter, and you can really see the joy he had that he was actually doing something for the army, no matter how degrading. He felt important and it was sad as he was just being kept out of the way but once his colleagues start (rightfully), making fun of him and his outfit he decides to shift his focus and harness what he has and what he has been taught and become a symbol. And it was so nice to see that even though he had the power of an army, he still wanted to fight alongside everyone. He didn’t neglect anyone in his team or steal the spot light. They are one and he was the tip of the arrow, guiding the driving force. Obviously he had awesome fight scenes and time to shine, but its only when he’s singled out. He never sought out a battle on his own after he had troops ready to ally themselves with him. He actually felt like he earned the title Captain, instead of just being a catchy name
We get brilliant scenes between Steve and people around him, and as they speak and talk, we get an insight into the different characters and their personalities. And somehow we get to explore more of what Steve is thinking without him saying a word. The development of the characters around him affects Steve as much as the audience and it was great to see it rub off on him and actually use his connections and his (non sexual) relationships to his advantage later on in both combat and conversation
Having worked on some 3d shots before, I understand the pain of post converting 2d to 3d and how it rarely comes out good. But the post conversion of Captain America was brilliant. At times the shutter couldn’t keep up with the fast motion which resulted in flickering, and the establishing shots were lazily converted, but where it mattered and in actual scenes the 3d was excellent. They are learning.
Overall, it had its flaws. While the story was fairly rocking and needed work and it was a lot of fun, I wouldn’t write this off a “generic popcorn superhero flick” as the character development and the buildup is thoroughly impressive and a worthy last instalment before The Avengers
