Re: Adventurefest
Hi
Seen
High Altitude:
The Sharp End: 19 (52) minutes
Lift: 11 (29) minutes
20 Seconds of Joy: 60 (60) minutes
Ten: 19 (36) minutes
Thought 20 seconds of joy could have been cut to 30 mins.
Quite exciting to watch but thought the people doing this solo no equipment climbing, base jumping etc were of a particular breed - mainly the Darwin award entrants.
Please don't take offence - but some images just made me cringe. I can see why they want to take part in these activities, the adrenaline rush must be huge but each time they seem to need an extra something to get the same feeling.
Missed out on the free drinks etc - did wonder why staff turned up in a corner but thought they were flogging something so didn't go to see. Dammm

Re: Adventurefest
Oh yes, I forgot, some locations were showing the High Altitude films last night already - where did you see it? I have tickets for these for Wednesday at Picturehouse Greenwich.

Re: Adventurefest
Hi Beate
Seen the film in Cardiff Vue. Take a cushion, while the action can be stunning, palms can become sweaty when you see some of the 'high altitude' stuff.
Used to climb cliffs (when a teenager) but got stuck one day. Only the threat of my mother being sent for got me to move. Never climbed again. I was never really up to these peoples' standard though.
Scenary stunning

I saw the films last night. I liked "20 seconds of joy" best. I will remember Karina Hollekim jumping off a cliff in Norway, with a twist and somersault, for a long time, it was so graceful. But when I got home I looked her up in Wikipedia to check she hadn't started jumping again - I'm very worried she'll kill herself eventually.

Re: Adventurefest
The Greenwich Picturehouse had unfortunately decided to put the High Altitude screening in their inferior basement screen 5 which has almost no incline, no reclining seats and nowhere to put your drink. Only about 18 people braved it, a rather pathetic turnout! They were also a bit thrown when I asked them to reserve some seats at the front for Bevvy and her husband who is in a wheelchair, it's not a great screen if you need assistance!
The films were interesting but the overwhelming opinion I took away from them is "those extreme sports people are either crazy or stupid or possibly both". And selfish, as Karina admitted herself. As one base jumper explained, "the average lifespan of a base jumper from when he/she first starts is 6 years. Then they either stop because they get scared, they stop because they get injured and have to, or well, they die."
I liked the "Lift" film the best as the twin skydivers were nice to watch, it looked a bit calmer than the other adrenaline sports like freeclimbing!

Re: Adventurefest
Thanks again Beate for sorting out those seats for us
although they were right at the front, it was probably the best place to be sitting in that screen!
I too enjoyed 'Lift', the film about the paragliders. It was the only one of the extreme sports shown that I would love to have go at if I were a few years younger!
20 seconds of Joy was interesting as it gave some insight into why some people do such stupidly dangerous things as base jumping.
My OH was not so impressed with the films, selfish w*****s was his description of the participants in these activities.
I concur with Beate's 6/10 for this

Re: Adventurefest
Saw the H2O screenings tonight, with about 13 other people, again in that godawful basement screen that gives me the neckache. The first film was alright, I knew the second film already from the Gala Night, and by the third film I had dropped off, couldn't take any more of the "adventure is about growing inside, so that you can lead a spiritual life" bollocks.
5/10 this time.

Re: Adventurefest
Saw H20 at the Ritzy, screen 5 which I'd never been into with reclining seats and drinks tables! More than a full house, to the point where one latecomer had a loud and long argument with staff about there not being a seat for her.
I thought the first film, Crossing the Ditch was really good - engaging. To the Rock and Back was boring, nothing of note happened - it would have been better if the film had been about the 1979 race. The third film about about surfing on the Amazon was ok, but no human interest - we didn't really learn anything about the people involved which may have made a more interesting story.
