I have only registered with Twitter to follow FMUK, which I do sporadically. I don't tweet and have no followers nor do I want any. I have no profile. So how come an old friend suddenly found me and a student film organisation from London wants to follow me?

your old friend probably searched by email and the film orgnisation probably found you through looking at followers of fmuk or anyone else you have followed

No I mean that people can find others so easily, even if they have no profile to speak of.

I only joined twitter to enter a comp - I really don't know what I am doing there.
Shortly after I got a message "Gov. Schwarzenegger is now following you on Twitter!‏"
How scary is that! 8O
I get a message almost every day about someone following me - I just ignore it but I don't know if I should be deleting them or something.

I refuse them all! And that's nothing personal if any of you have tried to follow me.

Don't worry if people add you on Twitter who you don't know - a common occurrence is that someone follows you hoping you'll follow back. They find you just by browsing through twitter - there's no invasion of privacy, though if you want you can protect your updates (meaning someone has to have your permission to see your updates)
Also if you're fed up of emails saying that someone is now following you, you can turn this off via the settings panel...
