PC, Console and Mobile Gaming

#1 Post by TheyCallMeMrGlass » Wed Oct 05, 2011 8:06 pm

Finally, a thread we boys can dominate  ;)

Unless you girls wanna talk about Glee Karaoke on Wii...oh I am getting sexist now, a few a_person special slaps coming my way no doubt. Really I am just kidding. This thread is for all of you and all types of gaming including games you might be playing on your mobile phone.

Anyway, thought I create this thread having not seen anything similar and I know some of you are gamers (actually I only know one of you is a gamer, looking at you AYBG but surely there's a couple more of you?)

So what games are you playing and on what? A console or PC or a mobile phone?

I completed 3 PS3 games recently. I am normally a PC gamer but since I b*ght my PS3 a couple of weeks ago, I have really marvelled at this brilliant console despite its now dated graphics spec compared to my PC and media centre.

The 3 games were:

Heavy Rain, Back to the Future the Game, and Unchartered.

I love games that are story driven. I am not a multiplayer gamer, never dabbled in it. I just love games with a solo player mission and great story. I come from the dying breed of point n click adventure gaming (as well as the first person perspective shoot em up games, as long as there is a story). So thats why I b*ght the above 3 games first. And its a perfect trio because each one is a completely different type of game play. And in their own way delivered a brilliant gaming experience.

Heavy Rain was the first game I played and completed. Its a very radical movie interaction game. Its been done many times before but never this slick, combining an ingenious reaction button sequence gameplay with a rivetting "neo noir" suspense thriller plot. The game seamlessly integrates the gameplay within the movie style visuals, invoking total immersion. The production is incredibly cinematic with great voice acting. Usually the cut scenes always have the better graphics but with this game its like one whole interactive cut scene. The look and atmosphere of the game is very David Fincher style with a story that should have made it on the big screen. The game is also half linear in that you can make different choices that sets the story on a different path resulting in different endings. Reminds me of one of my all time favourite PC games, Bladerunner. The gameplay is reaction based and really gets you on the edge of your seat during the action moments. Highly recommended. 9/10

Back to the Future The Game. OMG this game is almost like a new movie sequel to the beloved movies which continues the adventures of Marty Mcfly and Doc Brown, in a stylish animated form. Christopher Lloyd actually returns to play the Doc and he is brilliant. He sounds older but he is still the Doc. Marty is voiced by an actor who sounds so much like MJF that its hard to believe its not him. Every single nuance and screechiness is there in his voice and his relationship with the Doc is just as it was in the films, funny and even poignant at times. But what really elevated this game is how the games recreates the frenetic energy, charm and vibe of the films with a story that perfectly fits with the series incorporating complexities of the 2nd movie, the charm of the 1st and the exhilerating finales of all 3 movies. Oh yes and the story includes time travelling and alternate realities that needs to be fixed...thought I best mention that ;) Most of the main characters in the movies are in the game and are voiced by sound-a-likes, some not quite as convincing as Marty but the nature of the characters are spot on. The game play is of the old traditional point and click kind. Its only available as a download from the PS3 network store. It only costs £15. It was released as a 5 episode serial every month. But its now just available as a pack. Its also available on PC. 8/10.

There is a playable demo of this game on the PS3 network store by the way, so nothing to lose, download and check it out. It should give you an idea and feel for the game but the main story doesnt kick off until after the demo ends! But still still check it out.

That's what I am loving about the PS3 too, all these demos available to try out of latest games.

The final game I completed which has made me totally unsociable both outdoor and online (mainly on fmuk ) is Uncharted. Wow, this combines brilliant cinematics with relentless andrenaline pumping shoot em up action. Its beautifully immersive with stunning visual settings. The colour pallete is so vivid and lush too which makes a refreshing change to the drab dark tones of most FPS games today. The story is very much an Indiana Jones type/Romancing the Stone adventure with the same kind of vibe and characterplay. Story is simple but intriguing. The gameplay is outstandingly smart and varied with a vastly more more enjoyable control system than the often frustrating Tomb raider games. The soundtrack is also terrific, the pacing is great, and the challenges are just the right level of difficulty to keep the momentum going without being easy. I b*ght Uncharted with its sequel Uncharted 2 as a double pack. I am scared to start Uncharted 2 just yet because I am afraid of its addiction until completion. 9/10

What I find novel, is the PS3 system of collecting trophies and medals etc. So gamers have an incentive to play the games again. But being new to the PS3, what rewards do you get from these trophies? Are they a great incentive? I'd like know.

So what are you boys and girls playing? Favourites? Any interesting news?

am very retro at the moment, seeing as a ps2 game costs about a £1 or less now and can keep me indoors for several evenings. Great way to save money! Cant wait to borrow a PS3 for Uncharted though.

I'm also stuck in one of the assassin's tombs in Assassins Creed 2, I'm one sequence from the end and want to finish it so I can swiftly move onto Brotherhood before revelations comes out next month!
Im also planning on b*ying Deus Ex, but I do have quite a few games I haven't even started yet!
Shadowhunters: Looking better in black than the widows of our enemies since 1234.

You know thats really true, the PS2 has a whole wealth of fantastic games at dirt cheap prices. Not only that, you can exchange the game for vouchers at Game, CEX, and other places. The PS2 itself is an impressive console too, the graphics are actually near comparable to a Wii. And it can be picked up for about £30-40 from Computer Exchange or gumtree/ebay (non slim version). Probably even cheaper on ebay but might as well b*y from CEX and get a 1 year warranty with it too. I think you have the best value gaming, very wise! I have a ps2 too but I havent hooked it up for years. I also had Eye toy games on it and I have to say the games are as enjoyable and exercising as the more expensive Wii console and games. I saw CEX selling the eye toy for only £5. So PS2 + eye toy plus say 5 eyetoy games = £50 as opposed to £140 Wii console with just one game.

v good deal indeed.
If I wasnt going to b*y a Wii early next year for my mum (2nd hand from CEX is only £45 now so it should fall below £30, great price, when the Wii2 draws near to release), so I'll be going Wii round my parents instead.

but totally ps2 still rocks if you ignore the crappy 'cutscene graphics'. And amazingly it still runs 11 years on! (I b*ght it in 2000 when I was an avid tween gamer). Old xboxs have almost all died since then. Sony are the biz for building for longevity.

And I believe you would kick my sorry ass into oblivion if I had a gaming contest with you! Your post really stuffed the chauvenism down my throat ;)

Deus Ex is also on my wishlist :)

Oh make sure you dont let gaming degrade your uni work, I did poorly in a couple of exams due to the evil that was Lemmings back in the 90s. But I was stupid, you are more cleverer, so that's not gonna happen with you ;)

I love my computer(s) but have never really been into gaming... the only game I got addicted to was The Legend of Zelda on Super Nintendo! that was a long long time ago!

I clearly remember playing together with my brother, trying to complet the game without saving the game and collecting the maximum hearts we could! I think we finished it once after 12 or 13 hours (without saving) and collecting 17 and 1/4 hearts!

so if I had to tick a box, this should be "retro console gamer" (even so I am really not a gamer... but there si no option for "not a gamer"

Edit: Just remember we played a lot of Secret of Mana as well... loved it :D
(I think I stopped playing/being interested when all the 3D acceleration started... it made me feel motion sick!)

I don't game that much. Just the odd PS2 shoot em' up, Lego/Mario on Wii and the Portal games on the PC. I love playing James Bond Nightfire on the PS2 because of the dated aiming system and graphics.

Member number 33 of the "100 free films in 2012" club. I saw 32, which is rather delightful.. I beat Mr. Glass on free films but he narrowly inched me out on total films seen.

Member number 33 of the "100 free films in 2011" club. I saw 20, interestingly enough. My more realistic target was to see more free films than TheyCallMeMrGlass. I lost.
