Shame

#1 Post by elski » Wed Oct 12, 2011 8:59 pm

In New York City, Brandon's carefully cultivated private life -- which allows him to indulge his sexual addiction -- is disrupted when his sister Cissy arrives unannounced for an indefinite stay.

Going to see this tonight with hubby who will undoubtedly (however much explicit sex is shown) go to sleep as he usually does in the cinema.

Nothing like a 9:15am screening of a much touted film with explicit sequences to keep you up. Also awake. (I'm so sorry, tiredness is hitting already)

Saw this at one of last night's LFF Gala screenings.
It's a stunning, mesmerising and often powerful film with a compelling central performance from Michael Fassbender as Brandon, a sex addict whose carefully controlled and emotionless life is affected by the arrival of his damaged and needy sister. It's a performance that is fearless and naked in every sense (female Fassbender fans well catered for here). Excellent support too from Carey Mulligan as his sister, whose slow nightclub rendition of New York, New York is definitely one of my favourite scenes of the year. James Badge Dale and Nicole Beharie are also very good, Dale in particular bringing some much needed humour as Brandon's boss.
It's beautifully directed by Steve McQueen (hard to believe this is only his second feature film) and stunningly shot in the less touristy parts of New York (including excellent use of the subway system). It also has a great score.
It's bound to be a film that divides people however. It's a slow moving film with, at times, very little dialogue. There's little background to the characters (why Brandon and his sister are the way they are isn't explored) and none of them are particularly likeable which will undoubtedly make it hard for some people to relate to. I expect a lot of FMUKers to hate this one to be honest. Personally I think it's an extraordinary film and anyone with an interest in artier, more psychological films that don't rely on overexplanation (sex addiction isn't explicitly discussed at all) should probably get something out of this.

Interesting and funny Q&A after the film too, with McQueen, Fassbender, writer Abi Morgan and producer Iain Canning. There was even a celebrity question courtesy of Australian actress Kerry Fox.

I was at the lff screening too and agree with your review of the film kevinknapman.

Wish id known about the q&a though, left to catch a train as the credits rolled....would have loved to have gotten more of an insight into this film and happily got a later service home.

We were at the 8:15 showing...can i ask which one you were at?

The 8:30 one. Always a gamble when they have two screenings at almost the same time as to whether you'll get a Q&A or not. It tends to be the later screening as the filmmakers introduce both screenings then often want to sit and watch the film with the audience.

Ah right, well thats good to know.....probably didnt miss anything then.

Will also keep that in mind for next year when making my bookings.....always assumed the earlier showing was the best one to go for...when the difference in times is so small, maybe I will ty for the later ones instead.

Cheers

wow kevinknapman, after reading that I am even more excited about seeing this film. I really loved "Hunger" and think Michael Fassbender is one of the most exciting actors working today. Love Carey Mulligan too! Glad McQueen didn't give in on cutting the film.
