Cold Souls

#1 Post by TheyCallMeMrGlass » Fri Oct 30, 2009 6:41 pm

Rated: 12A [See Full Rating] for nudity and brief strong language

Runtime: 1 hr 41 mins

Genre: Comedies

Synopsis: In response to shiny, bigger, better American consumerism comes COLD SOULS, first-time feature director Sophie Barthes' surreal comedy in which souls can be extracted and traded as commodities.... In response to shiny, bigger, better American consumerism comes COLD SOULS, first-time feature director Sophie Barthes' surreal comedy in which souls can be extracted and traded as commodities. Balancing on a tightrope between deadpan humor and pathos, and reality and fantasy, the film presents Paul Giamatti as himself, agonizing over his interpretation of Uncle Vanya. Paralyzed by anxiety, he stumbles upon a solution via a New Yorker article about a high-tech company promising to alleviate suffering by extracting souls. Giamatti enlists their services - only to discover that his soul is the shape and size of a chickpea - intending to reinstate it once he survives the performance. Complications ensue when a mysterious, soul-trafficking “mule” borrows Giamatti's stored soul for a talentless, Russian soap-opera actress. Rendered soulless, Paul is left with no choice but to follow the trail back to St. Petersburg. Funny, charming and wildly imaginative, the film explores the profound moods and inner struggles of a man in search of his essence. Also starring David Strathairn, Emily Watson and Dina Korzun. --© IDP/Samuel Goldwyn Films

Starring: Paul Giamatti, David Strathairn, Dina Korzun, Katheryn Winnick

Starring: Paul Giamatti, David Strathairn, Dina Korzun, Katheryn Winnick, Lauren Ambrose, Emily Watson

Director: Sophie Barthes

Gets 76% on Rottentomatoes. Sounds very weird. Reminds me of Being John Malkovich. Look forward to seeing it though as Paul Giamatti has always been entertaining to watch in the few films I have seen him in.

Late trains meant I missed it at the LFF, desperate to see it, I heart Paul Giamatti.

This is the first time ive seen SFF reuse a code for a different screening (although its often given out for the wrong film) - even more worrying as it was originally the only code for the vue west end harry brown that haasnt been yet so hopefully doesnt mean that screenings cancelled

A seriously weird film, billed as sci fi but more a black comedy.
Some really funny bits (10%) some very sad bits (5%) but 80% just plain weird.

What with the actor playing himself it is all very Being John Malkovitch

Not really seen Paul Giamatti before, but will be lookng him up to see what else he has done.

don't plan a vegatarian curry after the film

I thought this film was OK, but maybe a little odd or a little confusing at times. It didn't really hold my interest and it wasn't really my sort of humour. Certainly not something I would choose to go and see if I had free choice of everything at the cinema. Not really much else to say, just a bland, dull film.
