BBC Symphony Orchestra: Studio Concert
Radio 3 | 17 April

Shakespeare's plays have been brought to life by the music of countless composers, from all nationalities, and here John Storgårds conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in an exploration of three composers' approaches to this genre. In particular we explore two of Shakespeare's late plays: Cymbeline and The Tempest.

In 1888 Chausson composed five incidental movements for his friend Maurice Bouchor's French translation of The Tempest, for performance at a marionette theatre. Originally scored for violin, flute, harp, celeste and voices, he later orchestrated two of these dances, performed here.

These are contrasted by framing twentieth-century responses from Germany. Berlin-based director Max Reinhardt (1873-1943) began commissioning Humperdinck to compose incidental music for his Shakespearean productions in 1905, and here the BBC SO present some of their earliest collaborations: extracts from The Tempest, The Merchant of Venice and The Winter's Tale. Alexander Zemlinsky also worked with Reinhardt, and his suite for Cymbeline is presented here.

All information is correct at time of publication.

Tom Wrigglesworth's Open Letters

Sony Award winning and Perrier nominated comedian Tom Wrigglesworth returns with a second series of his Open Letters, tackling the nation's biggest gripes with his customary mix of wit and wordplay.

As heard on The Now Show and The News Quiz, Tom is Radio 4's comedy consumer crusader and he's back to set the world to rights again. Well, maybe not the world, that's best left to serious politicians like Silvio Berlusconi, but Tom will certainly look at some of Britain's most annoying consumer complaints like what exactly is a booking fee and why do we need to p*y one to go and see a concert? And if we are doing the booking, does that mean we're technically admin support and can go to the staff Christmas party?

Dates: Tuesday 10 April
Venue: BBC Radio Theatre
Doors open: 7.15pm

To apply for tickets, visit the BBC Tickets Website.
