Interesting review Beate. That is why I chose to book my tickets for a 2D screening first! Seeing it tomorrow at Tottenham court road. 3D was a distraction to me too when I saw the 20 minute preview. To me 3D only works well with animation films not with real life action.

Beate, how did you rate Cameron's other movies such as Titanic, True Lies, Terminators 1 & 2? Just gives us an idea where you stand with Cameron films Personally, I think he is a king of the action world!

I loved Titanic. True Lies was ok and I have never seen Terminator.

I was sitting towards the front near the reserved seats and heard securtiy say that the VIP was in the building. I still couldn't work out who it was despite being across the aisle from the reserved seats.
I agree with Beate about the film being dark, at times apart frm the fluresctent colours, everything seemed grey to me. I also found the glasses very restrictive, especially as I already had my glasses on underneath them. For me, 3D wont work until that obstacle is addressed. I did enjoy the film, its just my cup of tea when I want escapism.
I would like to see it in 2D now. Especially as I've just watched Jonathan Ross, and saw how wonderful the colours were on my TV. I wonder if it was because I was near the front, or was the film just not shown right.

Agree almost word by word on what Beate says in her review...Its so difficult classifying the movie into a genre coz it has almost all ingredients - sci-fi, romance, action - with an eco conservation message thrown in....I didnt really see any difference between 2D and 3D in the first 20 mts but once the action moves to the forest, I enjoyed the 3D.....Could also be due to the fact that its my first 3D movie in 16 yrs :-( The color schemes were not bright (like say in UP) which also seemed to irritate the couple sat next to me...The length was a huge minus and the movie could have done with some more editing...IMO, the movie is similar to Titanic - not a great movie but definitely great entertainment... never been a big fan of Cameron and this movie does not change my opinion much...6/10 from my too...

Must agree also with Beate on the film, although the near 3 hours didn't seem so bad...

I was there at 5pm, whilst waiting for a friend to show up thought I'd stroll up the escalators to see what was happening, saw the queue and said "I'm staying right here". Got on the phone to call my friend but she didnt get there until 6pm, by which time they stopped letting people in - I was annoyed as there were a few seats next to me on the back row.

My only gripe is that for films where a high turnout is expected, get the ushers to seat people so you don't get one seat here, another there. I'm sure a few people missed out unfairly, including my friend & her son.

Oh, and I kept my 3D glasses... although the alarm went at the cinema exit when I was leaving, but I didn't realise it was caused by me... honest!!!

Hmmm... I'm beginning to wonder if different cinemas have different types of 3d. All of you seem to be agreeing with the "darkness" of the 3d. I know exactly what that is like as that was always a drawback with the OLD 3d technology using the red/green or red/blue glasses etc. The recent Channel 4 3D week had that kind. Is it possible that this maybe why? Although I didnt like the 3d when I saw the 20min preview of Avatar, I didnt find any problem with the lighting, in fact I appreciated the vibrant colours. I think I saw that at the Trocadero (Shaftsbury Avenue). So either the screening was faulty, or that cinema you all saw it at has an inferior 3D.

I'm trying to google what type of 3d each cinema uses in London and if there are differences in quality. Not having any luck getting that info but I think its important to know.

I am a big James Cameron Fan and thought the film was v good, but totally agree with what everyone is saying, film was half an hour too long. The film was dark in a few places but thought the 3D was amazing throughout the whole film. Yes you had all the action bits at the end (which in themselves, i would recommend people to see on the big screen alone).

But even at the beginning- when Jake was doing the voiceover and was in the shuttle, did no-one notice all the 3d going on there? you could really see depth throughout the whole film and made the characters come off the screen to give it dimension. When the film was in the helicopter machines again it was cleverly done in 3D and really brought the whole film alive for me.

The fact that was a first to get a goodie bag on the seat as well was a good bonus as well?

Has anyone else got a goodie bag before in another preview? and what was the best contents? (Maybe start another thread?)

Sorry I dont know what you guys look like or I would have said hello. I was first in the queue (with 2 girls) but then moved towards the back as one of our friends was running late.

Overall I would give the film 8/10 (reminded me of another James Cameron film The Abyss with the eco message) When Titatanic was out I ended up seeing it 3 times. Once coz I wanted and 2 times coz my wife wanted to see it again and then again!!!! So will def go and see it again (maybe in 2d to see the difference)

I'm seeing this at the IMAX tonight and expect it's in 3D but it should be good there, no? I have yet to see a 3D film I'm totally comfortable with. Doubt we'll get goodie bags seeing as they're pa*d for tickets (shock horror) though not by me but not sure whether I'm looking forward to it or not. OH and several of his guy friends are v excited but all I can think of is that it starts at 9 and when am I going to get to bed?!

You should enjoy it, especially on the IMAX. I'd never watched a 3D movie in a cinema before last night, and I was impressed. Even the 20th Century Fox logo looks good in 3D... I thought I was gonna bang my head on the logo!
