So what are your favourite XMAS movies?

#1 Post by TheyCallMeMrGlass » Fri Dec 25, 2009 11:26 am

Christmas TV is not what it used to be before we got spoilt with Video rentals and then DVD and now BluRay and downloads. I remember when I was a kid, I'll be circling the must see on the exciting xmas editions of Radio Times and TV Times. And almost every year, The Wizard of Oz will be on. And every year I would watch it without fail. Today, Polar Express seems to have taken over the prestigious role deservedly and is on tv today. The Incredibles and Happy Feet are also on TV, great family films but no Wizard of Oz :( I have the DVD for all 3 films but yet I still anticipate watching them on tv! Bizarre, I cant figure why I do!

Anyway, enough rambling so here's my fav xmas films :

The Wizard of Oz
Polar Express
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Back to the Future
Jason and the Argaunauts
Gremlins
Nightmare Before Xmas
Home Alone
National Lampoon Xmas Vacation

Well, only 5 of the above actually has any sort of xmas theme but the others somehow give me a xmas feeling :)
My film reviews here . ......My FMUK 2014 ratings.......My FMUK 2011 ratings.......My FMUK 2013 ratings . ......My FMUK 2012 ratings .

We had Polar Express too here on German TV! And that Scrooge film with Bill Murray. I also love the Muppet Christmas Carol which I have on DVD.

My all time favourite Christmas film is one though which no one in the UK will ever know unless they have lived in Germany, where it is a classic and shown without fail every Christmas repeatedly on all programmes: "Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel", or translated "Three hazelnuts for Cinderella". It's a Czech film from the 70's, they made a lot of fantastic fairy tale films, but this one is the best. Cinderella has a white horse called Nikolaus, she is a bit of a tomboy who loves to go out riding and shooting with bow and arrows. The three hazelnuts are something she gets as a gift, and they contain outfits: the first is a hunter's costume so she can go hunting with the prince, the second is a ballgown so she can dance with the prince, and the third is the wedding dress. All this takes place in deepest winter with lots of snow, which is probably the reason it is being shown at wintertime. The story is brilliant and funny, the music is wonderful (I can hum the title melody at any given moment, just ask me), and it's all self-explanatory so even the OH enjoys it (it's dubbed into German).

Well, for me, it's all the golden oldies -White Christmas, Holiday Inn, It's a Wonderful Life, Home Alone, and Die Hard. Needless to say, there has been no time to watch any of these films this year, as I've been run off my feet, feeding an army (oops, I mean my family). However, I've recorded what I can, and we have a few of them on DVD, so I will be watching my favourites in February probably! :D

The Wizard of Oz is on on New Years day on Channel 5, I've got it highlighted in the Radio times along with
The Holiday, White Christmas, Notting Hill, Mary Poppins and Miss Potter. I can't believe TheyCallMeMrGlass you like Jason and the Argaunauts, I had to endure that film for 20 years when my Dad was alive it was his favourite film and I still don't know what an Argaunaut is! So it always make me smile seeing it listed happy/sad memories (oops that brought a tear to my eyes remembering past years)
