Haha - I was one of the ones who stayed away from Covent Garden last night (I had that hill to contend with) and am glad I did. Thought this would have been one which appealed to OH as he's a music junkie, but I'm thinking I was spared especially having read Spanner's brilliant review!

Personally I think it's depressing that several people seem to not even be prepared to give this film a chance on the basis of one review that refers to it as 'pants'. Although it is clearly a film that isn't going to be everybody's cup of tea. I have to say I enjoyed it. It's not a perfect film and it's approach is a little scattershot, but that seems to be quite faithful to the spirit of Ian Dury. I was never a huge fan of Ian Dury & The Blockheads but I always found him a fascinating person and Andy Serkis is extraordinary in getting that across. The rest of the cast are also pretty good. Give this film a chance and don't let one negative review put you off.

I have enjoyed reading the reviews and agree with them. It seems like Marmite, you either love it or hate it!

If your referring to what I said I wasn't talking about your review. I was referring to the one that gave it 1/10 and said it was 'pants'. And I never said that person wasn't entitled to their opinion. I just think it's a shame if people chose not to see that film on the basis of that review alone, which is the feeling I got from a couple of the comments that followed it. I could see where you were coming from with your review actually, even though I felt a bit more generous towards it.

To be fair, I did say I wasn't that keen in the first place. I don't think anyone here is actually going to base their decision to see a film or not on one solitary review... but reviews are there for a reason. I just thought it was a funny review which confirmed my suspicions. It's great that others enjoyed it.

I think some people who couldn't get to the previews for this film because the weather was so bad felt a little better that the reviews weren't all that sparkling so they didn't feel they had missed out on too much. Of course everyone should make up their own minds and I would say most of us do just that but I also don't think that people who give a truthful and negative review should be made to feel that their opinions aren't valuable too. I remember being very badly criticised because I gave a couple bad reviews. Another FMUKer actually told me that cinema probably wasn't my thing and I should stop going. Now that really was uncalled for!

I doubt anyone stayed away based on spanner's review as within it she mentions that her boyfriend gave it 8.5/10.

I enjoy reading other peoples opinions, usually after seeing the film, especailly when they differ from my reaction.

It's interesting to see how people have enjoyed something like Marley & Me, that I hated due to its plodding wish washy-ness or that not everyone has fallen in love with Up! as much as me.

In fact some of the best loved movies are the ones that polarise people.

I agree and I would never do that. My comment wasn't directed at the negative review in any way.

God! I would never do that. How obnoxious. I've definitely disagreed on several occasions with what people have said in reviews (and on here if I'm being honest) but I would never say they were wrong. For the record I'm not saying spanner's opinion is in any way wrong or not valuable and I don't have a problem with them expressing that opinion. It was just a knee-jerk reaction to a few comments that came after that seemed to suggest that people were glad they hadn't bothered to see it on the basis of one negative review. I'm sorry if that wasn't the case.
