To answer your specific question, the reason that you can't just have a big screen in front of the original film screen is that your eyes would still be seeing and processing all the images at once. As far as I know, the only practical solution to watching a 3D film or TV without the glasses would be holographic projection but I have no idea how far advanced the technology on holographic projection is like.
Anyways, I'm really no scientist but that's the best explanation I can give you!
