Lots of FMUKers trekked over to Whiteley's -- lovely to see funthing29, MrG, valda and celini and to meet tsoiboy at the end. We all stayed for the little bit extra at the end and then missed it trying to get our 3D glasses back on.
LOL, that was funny, I felt like an idiot when I finally got the glasses back on, only to find the scene finished!

Nice to see all of you fmukers too, its been a long while since I seen some of you.

I had lowered my expectations for this film mainly because I wasnt too impressed with the trailers but in a nutshell, this is a sweet and enjoyable Pixar feature but lacks the emotional punch of their greater output such as Toy Story, Up, Finding Nemo etc. The film feels moulded in a modern Disney frame of values and moral teachings with the inclusion of plenty of Disney style sidekick slapstick humour.

The story treads a standard fare character journey of self discovery and responsibility, laced with your typical Disney moral messages. I commend the film for being something different to what the trailers led us to believe but having said that, this is not a film marked with Pixar's usual...ahem...Brave ventures in originality. There is an unexpected turn of direction midway through but it is an amalgamation of elements from several past Disney films. What gives this the Pixar signature is the unconventional way those elements are arranged. Also, another Pixar signature included are the songs playing to a montage of sequences. I liked the songs, they are sweet, if unmemorable folksy Scottish jingles. Patrick Doyle gets a turn this time to compose the score for a Pixar film and is pleasant enough but nothing outstanding as recent regular, Michael Giacchinno.

Its got plenty of heart, splendid voice overs (Colony predictably stood out), fun characters, engaging story and lots of laughs (both adult and juvenile) but perhaps ultimately not a film that would come to the tip of my tongue in future if I am trying list the best half of Pixar's films.

The 3D as usual for animated fare, is effective. However, this is not the most vibrant of films, certainly not as colourful as say, Toy Story or Monsters Inc, so the colours look dark and very washed out when donning the 3D glasses...I might go see this again in 2D, otherwise I'll borrow it on Blu Ray.

7.5/10

Also, a word about the traditional Pixar short that presided the main feature. "La Luna" was a whimsical, surreal and amusing story of a boy taken on a fishing trip for the first time with his pa and Grandpa but turns out its not quite fishing...Its a fine addition to their collection of shorts since the 80s. Its not their best. In fact their recent shorts never really captures the charm, soulfulness and jaw dropping innovation of their 80s work which I had been a fan of since those days before they made Toy Story. But its a sweet short and I would look forward to watching it again on the blu ray release.

We enjoyed Brave -- the backgrounds were so well animated -- it was better than the real world.
I always think it is a shame that stuff looks so dark in 3D - I look forward to seeing it brighter on Bluray.

A good story -- with a bit of originality nice to have a princess who does not
get married at the end of the film!!
Merida's hair certainly deserved to be credited as a character in its own right for the animation.

Not too many laughs in our screening – but a good sprinkling all the way through -- the biggest laugh from the kids in the room -- the bums when the clansmen had to escape from that upper room!

Not a classic like Toy Story and Up but certainly very good entertainment. 8/10.

Brave was an interesting title actually.
It sounded like it was going to be about Merida's bravery against facing bears but it wasnt that at all, the bravery reffered to the courage of accepting your flaws, and changing the way you are which applied to both mother and daughter. At least that's the message I got from the film.
Originally Disney wanted to call the film "The Bear and the Bow". However they felt that some patrons would think that it was a sequel to Brother Bear. So they changed to Brave to enticed boys as much as girls to see the film.

Having seen this now once again in a very full Glasgow Quay. (What does Sky expect when they use the smallest screen possible) I don't feel it lose any of it's charm. I still love it just as much as the first time. Did anyone else catch one of my favourite lines too?
When Fergus the king and the clansmen all go up to the top of the castle in the background you can hear someone says

"I can see my house from here
OH did think that some people may not get some of the lines or humour in this as it is very Scottish. And wondered if the Americans needed subtitles! :p

The only thing I would say I don't the 3D does anything to enhance the viewing pleasures as I saw it in 2D previous. Whilst the image is still as sharp if you don't like 3D glasses or your eyes are not as perfect then go and see it in 2D. 9/10

I caught that line this time and lots of little things happening in the background.

I love Brave just as much the second time as I did originally. I'd say it was dimmer at Whiteleys than when I saw it the first time, which is unfortunate. It's definitely a departure for Pixar, but I don't see that as a bad thing. I wouldn't call this a fairly tale, though. I think it seems more Disney-like than it actually is, due to a princess being involved, but the truth is she's nothing like a Disney princess.

I've been saying it on Twitter, but I'll say it here now, I think Brave should get a best pic nod at next year's Oscars. Hopefully, I be able to say "I told you so" :winktongue:

good but not a great.

Visually its splundiferous, you can forgive the odd bit of lag with some 3d.

My only minor gripe - Merida/Brave/Scootishlass is a great role model if a little scary in the face lol but I genuinely thought she was older than a teen from the pictures. She looks like a (youngish) mum in them, her skin is definitely not teenager, as with her figure and hairdo.

Anyway thats the door open for the Glagow Commonwealth Games. Brave makes you want to visit Scotland right now!
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?

Loved this, it was absolutely charming, funny, exciting, sweet. For once I thought the 3D was excellent and anyway was completely in awe of the animation.
