Re: Untouchable
Yes, it was his aunt. But I wasn't clear on that at the time & 20 some odd films later these things tend to slip the mind.
As for Driss, are you telling me that a black African lead wouldn't be more acceptable/preferable in France than an Arab one? Maybe it is as innocent as you say, but I did some checking into this and it seems like, in terms of racism in France, Arabs/Muslims don't have it too well. I get what the point was, but I think the change is significant.

102 Different free films seen in 2010 plus 2 repeat viewings and a few tv show screenings... not too shabby. Thanks to everyone for their contributions here.

Re: Untouchable
Haha, you do watch to many films
Oh, this is what you meant? So my answer is nope that would not make any difference, a racist is a racist, as long as you are different, you are not welcome.
I sincerely doubt there is more racism towards North African Muslim than there is towards sub-Saharan (black African) Muslim descendants; but you would anyway struggle to find any numbers or statistics for this as it's illegal to officially categorise the population according to their ethnicity in France.
I think the directors kept the root of their unlikely meeting/relationship: a middle aged Parisian bourgeois vs a youth from the surburbs.

Re: Untouchable
Some critics seem determined to mark this down for allegedly being too populist or compromised by aiming for the mass market - I have seen both a 2-star and a 3-star review. But so what - just about everyone here who has seen it has loved it, praised it to the skies, said it's exceptional and some have seen it twice or wanted to. A good example of an occasion to trust your own judgement and to be glad you saw a preview. My main question would be "Is it enjoyable?" but critics sometimes fail even to address that one.

Re: Untouchable
I agree. pa*d journalists sometimes have a high and mighty air about films that everyone likes, declaring them not "artistic" enough. I have seen quite a few 2 star reviews, and I don't understand them at all. It's fine not to like a film but the reasons some of them give don't stack up for me. It's like they seem determined to find fault in something everyone else loves.

If they didn't like it, they didn't like it. They're wrong if they didn't like it, of course.

Re: Untouchable
Saw this for free via Showfilmfirst at Harbour Lights in Southampton - a really funny film - I have not heard so much laughter in a cinema for a long time, which is really remarkable as the film is subtitled!
Re: Untouchable
I've been urged to see this since it was realised in France last year. I can see why it is very popular, it has great performances and a touching story. For me though it does overdo the cheese at times and the more dramatic plot points seem rushed to make things feel good again. Overall I think most will see this and come out with a big smile.
Re: Untouchable
Saw this at a free screening, was very surprised I enjoyed it so much! Very entertaining and touching. The beard grooming scene had me in stitches. The 2 actors were excellent. Highly recommend!

I couldn't agree more. I've also seen a number of 2 star reviews & none of the reasons they've given gives much rationale to the rating given. As far as I'm concern there is no rationale for a 2 star rating for such a good film & frankly I think some of the so called critics are disappearing up there own arses!
