What a movie!!

I saw this at the Ritzy - Brixton....it was a full house! The people who work there were very kind and helped people find seats when they were running out. They also told individuals to remove their coats from seats next to them to free up more spaces. When I went to see Lovely Bones at Shepherds Bush there were people coming in when the movie started looking confused and not knowing where to go in the dark! Could have used the friendly staff there :p

Back to the film...I thought it was great...I loved Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela..I thought he was prefect, full of character! I felt sad that his family life was not as supportive as it could have been...it was difficult for him to get people to see what he saw until the results of his actions and ideas were obvious

I felt Matt Daemon was quite bland in character.

9/10 for meee!

oh what a shame, they were late starting it so with the traillers it didn't come on until 11ish, would they not let you in? I wish they hadn't let the family of nacho chompers in the back row in, blimey I tell you what dolby surround sound had nowt on the sound effects that lot was producing... I mean howay man, nacho's at 10.15 am !!!! anyway now for my thoughts... took the sadsacks to this one as we decided to have a family day of eating and shopping afterwards, sadsack 2 was a bit bored and a lot shuffley, last time i sit next to him i tell ya, but sadsack 1 really enjoyed it, he said he found the subject really interesting and has been asking questions about it all day. i am neither a rugby fan or politically minded, though i'm sure i've got a copy of 'free-eeee nelson man-del-la' kicking about the loft somewhere, but i totally loved this film, it seemed to fly over, held my interest throughtout, i think this was helped by the fact that i didn't know the outcome of the rugby match prior to watching the film ..But i was totally drawn in, especiallly whislt the final match was being played, i was proper on the edge of my seat. loved it something for everyone and the boyf loved it too so i won super girlfriend points, which is brill cos i took him off to b*y me a new ring whilst he was in such a good mood. 9.75/10

Saw this at Greenwich today and really enjoyed it. I thought Morgan Freeman was good as Mandela and the characters, politics and rugby all combined well to make a very good film. Would gladly watch again!

But sport means a lot to a lot of people (in evidence by those people who didn't go to see this today as they had to watch tennis instead!), and it can unite or divide them. I started blubbering half-way through when the team played with the little black kids and didn't really stop till the end. Gosh, how tiny was Mandela's cell at Robben Island! Now, one world cup isn't going to unify a nation. But what a clever man Mandela was. What a dignified one too. People sat routed to the spot when the credits rolled.

Beate, I'm glad I wasn't the only one blubbing. That's about when I started too. Incredibly emotive film.

I agree 100% with what you've said, I think I was the only one in Manchester blubbering. I cannot comprehend that the colour of someone's skin was still causing such a huge divide only 20 years ago, it breaks my heart

Good film, and an interesting way of covering that huge period of history by focusing on a less serious, apparently non political event.

Very watchable, but even to a non rugby lover like me there were a few scenes which seemed there purely as a "Rugby for dummies" explanation for the US audience.

Also, thought the scenes of the final were a bit overlong as I'd kind of guessed the result, so there was little drama in watching the match highlights.

That said Morgan Freeman was fantastic as usual, isn't he always very statesmanlike, and there was some real emotion and power in just seeing or rehearing some of the facts: the visit to Mandela's cell especially.

Plus, did that really happen with the 747? I knew that what I thought would happen wouldn't happen, but was still on the edge of my seat at that moment.

Historical inaccuracies
...

During the Rugby World Cup Final, security men are shocked to see what appears to be a low-flying jumbo jet, only to see it is harmless. In reality, all security staff were briefed about the jet manoeuvres planned for that day.

Doesn't exactly say whether that particular jet happened to fly over.

Really enjoyed this film - so insightful and emotive. I haven't seen a bad film yet that Client Eastwood has directed. Would definitely recommend.

So frustrated! Really wanted to see this and had tickets for the Odeon Guildford preview on Sunday morning. On Friday my OH said he wanted to go to a car boot sale instead so was taking the car. So I asked a friend. She texted me on Sunday morning to say she was sick and by then it was too late to organise another way to get to Guildford... :(

Sounds like it's worth p*ying for though!

Ditto! I loved Gran Torino too.

Invictus for me - very powerful. I actually didn't know the outcome of the World Cup (although by the time they reached the final I guessed which way the film was going!) so I was probably in more suspense than most. Morgan Freeman did an absolutely stellar job of playing Nelson Mandela; man that guy can act! And Matt Damon's South African accent was flawless, this is back up by a Saffa buddy of mine!

Defintely a go-see.
