I would have given Marion Cotillard the nomination for best supporting actress in Nine over Penelope Cruz, Marion was far better than her!

weird! becuase they only covered the main ones in that ceremony, you'd have thought the rest had gone out in press release to confirm them all.

Mine would be Alfred Molina for An Education, a really good film and he was one of the best things in it. Reminded me a bit of Al Pacino years ago in Donnie Brasco, also a little overlooked, I thought it was a really subtle performance that made you really feel and understand exactly what the character was going through.

Haven't seen all the supporting actors, but I'd put this above Matt Damon.

Nice to see An Education get recognised though.
Yes, Matt Damon gave one of his better performances, but the accent was not 100% right, and nothing like as good a performance as Alfred Molina's in An Education. I thought An Education was really good overall, but I suspect it will be the big money films (and their stars) that attract most awards.

I'd have thought that Invictus would have got nominated for best film ahead of A Serious Man and District 9...

Tbh i think Inglorious should win best picture, for me it was a better film than either Avatar or The Hurt Locker although there has been little media focus on it, so im assuming it won't win :(

I've not seen all the films nominated for Best Picture, but I loved An Education and Inglorious Basterds. Precious was a great film, but not easy to watch. Up was fantastic (and I normally do not like animations). I know a lot of people did not like Up in the Air, but I loved it as much as I love my frequent flyer miles (i.e. loads!!! ;-)) I suspect I'll love A Serious Man, as it looks so 'classy'.

But of these films, only Inglorious Basterds and Up have a 'broad' appeal.

As for the duel between Hurt Locker and Avatar - if money still talks in Hollywood, it will be the latter. But remember Slumdog vs. Benjamin Button...

Haven't read the list in full yet but I am quite surprised that The Lovely Bones didn't get more. Stanley Tucci certainly deserves to be nominated though. There are the obvious ones in there of course which are deserved.

I personally don't think it was strong enough to deserve more, but surprised Saoirse Ronan isn't on there.

I'd agree, Saoirse Ronan was very convincing, but maybe the role did not offer enough scope. I usually 'like' Stanley Tucci, but I think he was a bit 'obvious' in this role, which kind of made for an inherent flaw in the logic. IMHO.
